Cerium-based conversion coatings to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminium alloy 6061-T6

Comparison between the inhibition efficiencies of Ce(III) and Ce(IV) ammonium nitrates against corrosion of AA2024 aluminum alloy in solutions of low chloride concentration

Environmentally friendly Ce-based sealing post-treatments were developed for PEO coatings on AM50 magnesium alloy. The influence of the Ce(NO3)3 concentration in the Ce bath and the time of the sealing process were evaluated in terms of morphological and structural properties using SEM, EDS and XRD. Ce content in the layer increased with both the amount of salt in the solution and the time of the sealing post-treatment process due to a higher Ce product accumulation into the pores and cracks of the coatings. Sealed PEO coatings revealed an improvement in the corrosion protection properties as measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Differences in the corrosion resistance values for the sealed coatings indicate a strong relation between the parameters of the sealing process and its effectiveness, showing higher resistance for the sealed PEO coating developed after 3 h of immersion in 10 g/l Ce(NO3)3 sealing bath.

Cerium tartrate as a corrosion inhibitor for AA 2024-T3

Abstract Corrosion of metallic components represents a major issue in the aeronautical sector, giving rise to safety concerns and significant financial damages. Conversion coatings (CC) based on hexavalent chromium provide exceptional corrosion protection at relatively low cost. However, environmental issues and health concerns raised a growing interest in the development of alternative technologies. These must not only be cost effective and environmentally friendly but also provide corrosion resistance and adhesion performance comparable to Cr6+-based CCs. Simultaneously fulfilling all of these criteria is a difficult challenge, and an industrial application has so far only been achieved by a small number of systems. This review critically summarizes the recent scientific literature and patents for chromate-free CCs on aluminum alloys and tries to assess their potential regarding the highly demanding aerospace requirements. The bath composition and coating characteristics of the trivalent chromium process, rare earth chemical conversion coatings, transition metal oxyanion additives, Zr/Ti-based chemical conversion coatings, sol-gel coatings, and smart coatings providing stimulus-related inhibitor release are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of the alternative technologies with regard to their practical implementation are debated, as the aeronautics industry is confronted with the necessity to move away from chromates in the near term.
