Objectification theory has linked self-objectification to negative emotional experiences and disordered eating behavior in cultures that sexually objectify the female body. This link has not been empirically tested in a clinical sample of women with eating disorders. In the present effort, 209 women in residential treatment for eating disorders completed self-report measures of self-objectification, body shame, media influence, and drive for thinness on admission to treatment. Results demonstrated that the internalization of appearance ideals from the media predicted self-objectification, whereas using the media as an informational source about appearance and feeling pressured to conform to media ideals did not. Self-objectification partially mediated the relationship between internalized appearance ideals and drive for thinness; internalized appearance ideals continued to be an independent predictor of variance. In accordance with objectification theory, body shame partially mediated the relationship between self-objectification and drive for thinness in women with eating disorders; self-objectification continued to be an independent predictor of variance. These results illustrate the importance of understanding and targeting the experience of self-objectification in women with eating disorders or women at risk for eating disorders.

Differences in the Theory of Mind profiles of patients with anorexia nervosa and individuals on the autism spectrum: a meta-analytic review

Addiction treatment providers are well aware that substance addictions routinely co-occur with psychiatric disorders and other substance addictions. The effectiveness of group treatment requires that all co-occurring disorders be identified. Practitioners tend to overlook the behavioral addictions that accompany substance-based and psychiatric disorders. This article provides a comprehensive overview of epidemiological data on behavioral addictions as they co-occur with substance addictions, psychiatric disorders, and other behavioral addictions. The major implications of this knowledge for the assessment and treatment of addictions are discussed.

Expanding the Scope of Dual Diagnosis and Co-Addictions: Behavioral Addictions

The current study examined descriptive characteristics of women 35 years and older seeking inpatient treatment for an eating disorder. A second purpose was to compare characteristics and treatment experiences of midlife patients to young adult patients. Participants were 193 women admitted for treatment to a residential eating disorders facility. All of the women received the standard inpatient treatment package offered by the treatment facility. Participants completed measures of eating attitudes, depression, anxiety, body image, and media influence at admission and discharge and a program assessment measure at discharge. Results revealed comparable scores on measures of eating attitudes, anxiety, and depression at admission, although younger patients scored significantly higher on measures of body image and media influence at admission. With regard to treatment experience, midlife patients experienced greater change with regard to depression and body image dissatisfaction and described family therapy and grief and loss group therapy as being significantly more helpful than young adult patients. There appears to be a number of similarities across age cohorts in terms of clinical presentation, but underlying causal factors may differ between age groups. In general, midlife patients and young patients describe the standard treatment package as equally helpful, although midlife patients might also benefit from groups addressing grief and loss.

Characteristics of Middle-Aged Women in Inpatient Treatment for Eating Disorders

Nutritional disorders are characterized by abnormal eating patterns. They include bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, avoidant and restrictive food intake disorder, pica and rumination. Eating disorders are frequently observed in social misfits and people suffering from depression. Anorexia and bulimia are more commonly observed in women compared to men with their onset in late youth or early adulthood and are mostly behavioural with no exact reason. They severely affect the health and social life of affected individual and require assistance from a clinician. Proper counselling with a trained psychologist can help prevent the incidence of eating disorders.
