The port in a packet network switching system that a packet should be associated with is determined by retrieving packet address information for a packet that is to be transmitted. A predetermined number of bits from the packet address information is selected to use a hash key, which is used to compute a table address. The contents of the table at that address are compared with the packet address information. If it matches, the packet is transmitted over the port associated with that particular destination address. If it does not match, the table address is incremented by one, and the contents of the new table location identified by the incremented address are compared with the packet address information. A high speed digital video network apparatus which utilizes the hashing function is implemented on a single integrated circuit chip, and includes a network protocol processing system interconnection, compression/decompression circuits, and encoder/decoder circuits.

A scalable, programmable software based application run on a programmed general purpose digital computer is used for interconnecting a plurality of heterogeneous network nodes. The application has the ability to convert between any two signaling protocols used, such as those used over a telecommunications network, by converting an originating protocol to a universal non-protocol specific representation, and then converting the universal non-protocol specific representation to a receiving protocol. A call context is used to store information elements created from the originating protocol so that a universal call model applies inter-working rules. The universal call model is also in communication with state machines associated with both the originating and the terminating sides in order to supply the appropriate response signals anticipated by the originating and terminating sides received when each is in communication with its own protocol. As such, the universal call model allows both the originating and terminating sides of a call to operate independently of each other by virtue of the fact that each side deal through the universal call model and not directly with the side for which the protocol message is being converted. Therefore, any protocol is easily converted to any other protocol by first translating the protocol message to the universal protocol non-specific format.

A high speed digital video network apparatus is implemented on a single integrated circuit chip, and includes a network protocol processing system interconnection, compression/decompression circuits, and encoder/decoder circuits. The interconnection includes a packet conversion logic which converts between a network protocol, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) packets, and the data protocol used to handle large data streams, such as Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) packets. The interconnection further includes a Virtual Channel Memory (VCM) for storing ATM cells for segmentation and reassembly, a Direct Memory Access (DMA) controller for connecting the VCR to the compression/decompression circuits, a Parallel Cell Interface (PCI) for connecting the VCM to an ATM network, a Pacing Rate Unit (PCU) for automatically reducing the maximum transmission rate in response to a sensed congestion condition in the network, and a Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) microprocessor for controlling the DMA controller and transfers between the memory, a host and the ATM network, for performing segmentation and reassembly of Conversion Sublayer Payload Data Units (CD-PDUs), and for performing conversion between the ATM Protocol and the MPEG protocol. The compression/decompression and decoder/encoder circuits may utilize MPEG to compress digitized images and motion video into compact data streams that can be moved across networks with bandwidths too narrow to accommodate the uncompressed data. The operating program for the RISC microprocessor is stored in a volatile Instruction Random Access Memory (IRAM) in the form of firmware which can be downloaded at initialization.

High speed single chip digital video network apparatus

A bi-directional wire-line to local area network interface, used between a remote host on a local area network (LAN), and a wire-line carrier system. A LAN media access control and physical interface converts outgoing LAN data from a LAN to an outgoing-data packet with a machine readable format. A LAN transmission control protocol and internet protocol stack identifies a protocol type of the outgoing-data packet from the LAN-MAC and physical interface. When the outgoing-data packet does not have a modem control command, a protocol converter correlates the outgoing-data packet to a channel number and depacketizes the outgoing-data packet into outgoing-binary data. Using the channel number, a connection controller and signal transform polls the outgoing-binary data and transforms the outgoing-binary data to a digitized representation of an analog signal having pulse code modulation (PCM). A wire-line carrier interface uses the channel number for multiplexing the digitized representation of the analog signal with frame bits, and also multiplexes any alarm conditions and signalling bits, as an outgoing-wire-line carrier signal. The wire-line carrier interface sends the outgoing-wire-line carrier signal over the wire-line carrier system.

Bi-directional wire-line to local area network interface and method

A method for providing called party control of telecommunications network services utilizes a call treatment processor having an associated calling party data memory for storing calling party identification data and a call treatment table. Depending on the time of day, day of week and data input by a user of the apparatus, elements of the serving apparatus including one of media conversion and network conversion apparatus are automatically controlled by the call treatment processor to provide telecommunications network services to the calling party as predetermined by the called party. According to the principles of the method of the present invention, at least some calling party identification data is prestored by the called party user of the present invention such as personal identification code, is obtained via the call treatment processor of the present invention at the time of an incoming call such as via automatic number identification, analyzed in view of a predetermined call treatment table having a plurality of priority call treatment levels and a call treatment actuated that is related to the called party's predetermined call treatment stored in the table. For example, a call from the called party's home telephone number, identified by PIN as the called party's spouse and further identified by a predetermined emergency code may have the highest priority level call treatment.

Method for called party control of telecommunications network services

A time division multiplex switching system converts call formats and signalling protocols so that calls can be interchanged between circuits originating in different networks thereby providing a gateway for telephone transmissions originating from sources (e.g., foreign countries) having differences in transmission (signal attenuation characteristics and companding laws) and signalling and numbering plans or protocols. This switching system is characterized by a processor which is programmed to identify the circuits requiring interconnection and to process signalling messages in accordance with the signalling systems and formats used in the circuits, while translating the signalling messages into common, protocol independent signaling messages which are used for establishing time division multiplex connections in a time slot interchange which is connected to the circuits via PCM highways and for exchanging signalling information (e.g., as to seizure, detection and release) between the circuits; the signalling messages also containing information for conversion of PCM data messages which are switched in the time slot interchange thereby reconciling differences in transmission, such as the companding law used for PCM encoding and decoding and the attenuation (pad value) of the call data in the circuits. The circuits may, for example, be incoming and outgoing trunks.

Time division multiplex switching system for interconnecting telephone circuits which operate in accordance with different signalling systems and call formats

Synchronous operation of any number of digital switching units of a TDM system is maintained by interconnecting the switching units to a timing signal highway which distributes timing signals generated by sources of such signals in any one of the units. The units are connected successively in a chain by timing signal distribution control lines. Validity signals are generated and transmitted by circuits in each unit along the lines so as to provide for transmission of timing signals generated in the first switching unit on to the timing signal highway and switch over of the timing signal generating function to successive ones of the units when the timing signal generation in preceding units becomes faulty.

Timing signal generation and distribution system for tdm telecommunications systems

A TDM (Time Division Multiplexed) telephony switching system which provides expanded switching capacity without change in the physical form factor of the system or of the design of the circuits which provide TDM multiplexed digital signals (the port and service circuits). Additional ports and service circuits are provided in the same number of time slots per frame as existed before system expansion thereby providing additional ports and/or service circuits which can be interconnected without significantly affecting the cost of the system. Expansion is achieved by multiplexing the digital signals and transmitting them at a higher rate on existing send highways of the system. The time slot interchange is expanded by providing a memory with additional locations for each group of additional circuits. The signals are demultiplexed and switched in the time slot interchange and transmitted on receive highways (additional receive highways being provided for the additional groups of circuits) at the rate at which the existing port and service circuits are designed to operate. The expanded system is, therefore, compatible since the highway signals as seen from the circuits being switched are unchanged. Also, the existing design of the shelves, and the back plane interconnecting board thereof, is compatible with the expanded system.
