PCR-based detection of bacterial DNA after antimicrobial treatment is indicative of persistent, viable bacteria in the chinchilla model of otitis media
J. Christopher Post,Jerome J. Aul,Gregory J. White,Robert M. Wadowsky,Thomas Zavoral,Reza Tabari,Brenda Kerber,William J. Doyle,Garth D. Ehrlich +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a single-point longitudinal study to determine whether the presence of viable bacteria or residual DNA in the middle-ear cleft of chinchillas was determined.

Comparative Evaluation of Culture and PCR for the Detection and Determination of Persistence of Bacterial Strains and DNAS in the Chinchilla Laniger Model of Otitis Media
Kenneth W. Anderson,L. A. Kingsley,Jerome J. Aul,Robert M. Wadowsky,J. Christopher Post,William J. Doyle,Garth D. Ehrlich +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that DNA, and DNA from intact but nonviable bacteria, does not persist in an amplifiable form for more than a day in the presence of an effusion; however, live bacteria, while not culturable, persist in a viable state for weeks.

Analysis of adult otitis media: polymerase chain reaction versus culture for bacteria and viruses.
E M Liederman,J C Post,Jerome J. Aul,D A Sirko,G. J. White,Craig A. Buchman,Garth D. Ehrlich +6 more
TL;DR: It is confirmed that culture-negative middle ear effusions contain genomic sequences from bacterial pathogens, and finding of HIV RNA and DNA in effusion from HIV-positives suggests replicating virus in this fluid.
