Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. The author's preface gives an outline: "This book is about weakconvergence methods in metric spaces, with applications sufficient to show their power and utility. The Introduction motivates the definitions and indicates how the theory will yield solutions to problems arising outside it. Chapter 1 sets out the basic general theorems, which are then specialized in Chapter 2 to the space C[0, l ] of continuous functions on the unit interval and in Chapter 3 to the space D [0, 1 ] of functions with discontinuities of the first kind. The results of the first three chapters are used in Chapter 4 to derive a variety of limit theorems for dependent sequences of random variables. " The book develops and expands on Donsker's 1951 and 1952 papers on the invariance principle and empirical distributions. The basic random variables remain real-valued although, of course, measures on C[0, l ] and D[0, l ] are vitally used. Within this framework, there are various possibilities for a different and apparently better treatment of the material. More of the general theory of weak convergence of probabilities on separable metric spaces would be useful. Metrizability of the convergence is not brought up until late in the Appendix. The close relation of the Prokhorov metric and a metric for convergence in probability is (hence) not mentioned (see V. Strassen, Ann. Math. Statist. 36 (1965), 423-439; the reviewer, ibid. 39 (1968), 1563-1572). This relation would illuminate and organize such results as Theorems 4.1, 4.2 and 4.4 which give isolated, ad hoc connections between weak convergence of measures and nearness in probability. In the middle of p. 16, it should be noted that C*(S) consists of signed measures which need only be finitely additive if 5 is not compact. On p. 239, where the author twice speaks of separable subsets having nonmeasurable cardinal, he means "discrete" rather than "separable." Theorem 1.4 is Ulam's theorem that a Borel probability on a complete separable metric space is tight. Theorem 1 of Appendix 3 weakens completeness to topological completeness. This book is an introduction to the modern approach to the theory of Markov chains. The main goal of this approach is to determine the rate of convergence of a Markov chain to the stationary distribution as a function of the size and geometry of the state space. The authors develop the key tools for estimating convergence times, including coupling, strong stationary times, and spectral methods. Whenever possible, probabilistic methods are emphasized. The book includes many examples and provides brief introductions to some central models of statistical mechanics. Also provided are accounts of random walks on networks, including hitting and cover times, and analyses of several methods of shuffling cards. As a prerequisite, the authors assume a modest understanding of probability theory and linear algebra at an undergraduate level. ""Markov Chains and Mixing Times"" is meant to bring the excitement of this active area of research to a wide audience.

We consider inhomogeneous Bernoulli measures of the form $\prod_{x\in\Lambda} p_x$ where $p_x$ are prescribed and uniformly bounded above and below away from 0 and 1. A comparison inequality is proved between the Kawasaki and Bernoulli-Laplace Dirichlet forms. Together with a recent result of Caputo on the gap of the Bernoulli-Laplace model, this proves a spectral gap of the correct order L^{-2} on cubes of side length L for the Kawasaki dynamics. The two block estimate of hydrodynamic limits is also obtained.

Let H(t,x) be the Hopf-Cole solution at time t of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation starting with narrow wedge initial condition, i.e. the logarithm of the solution of the multiplicative stochastic heat equation starting from a Dirac delta. Also let H^{eq}(t,x) be the solution at time t of the KPZ equation with the same noise, but with initial condition given by a standard two-sided Brownian motion, so that H^{eq}(t,x)-H^{eq}(0,x) is itself distributed as a standard two-sided Brownian motion. We provide a simple proof of the following fact: for fixed t, H(t,x)-(H(t,x)-H^{eq}(t,0)) is locally of finite variation. Using the same ideas we also show that if the KPZ equation is started with a two-sided Brownian motion plus a Lipschitz function then the solution stays in this class for all time.

Local Brownian property of the narrow wedge solution of the KPZ equation

We consider a system of N particles with a stochastic dynamics introduced by Brunet and Derrida. The particles can be interpreted as last passage times in directed percolation on {1,...,N} of mean-field type. The particles remain grouped and move like a traveling wave, subject to discretization and driven by a random noise. As N increases, we obtain estimates for the speed of the front and its profile, for different laws of the driving noise. The Gumbel distribution plays a central role for the particle jumps, and we show that the scaling limit is a L evy process in this case. The case of bounded jumps yields a completely different behavior.

We consider finite-range asymmetric exclusion processes on $\mathbb Z$ with non-zero drift. The diffusivity $D(t)$ is expected to be of ${\mathcal O}(t^{1/3})$. We prove that $D(t)\ge Ct^{1/3}$ in the weak (Tauberian) sense that $\int_0^\infty e^{-\lambda t}tD(t)dt \ge C\lambda^{-7/3}$ as $\lambda\to 0$. The proof employs the resolvent method to make a direct comparison with the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process, for which the result is a consequence of the scaling limit for the two-point function recently obtained by Ferrari and Spohn. In the nearest neighbor case, we show further that $tD(t)$ is monotone, and hence we can conclude that $D(t)\ge Ct^{1/3}(\log t)^{-7/3}$ in the usual sense.
