Max Weber and the Dispute over Reason and Value: A Study of Philosophy, Ethics, and Politics

According to Max Weber, value-rational action is characterized by a self-conscious elaboration of ultimate values and a consistently planned orientation to those values without regard for other consequences. This article reconstructs this type of social action within the Model of Frame Selection. This model proves to be able to incorporate Weber’s ideas of a ‘value reflexion’ and ‘value orientation’ as special cases of a more general theory of action. Thereby, links are also established to works of other theorists such as Raymond Boudon or Jurgen Habermas. On this basis, it is further argued that the Model of Frame Selection is well suited to provide Weber’s macro-sociological concepts of ‘value spheres’ and ‘life orders’ with an action-theoretic foundation. The article concludes with general remarks regarding the relationship between the Weberian research program and the approach of analytical sociology.

Im Beitrag wird die „Theorie der Frame-Selektion” von Hartmut Esser unter Bezugnahme auf Max Webers Handlungstheorie einer Revision unterzogen. Das wesentliche Defizit der Theorie von Esser, das im fehlenden Geltungsbezug der Frames besteht, wird in seiner Konzeptualisierung des wertrationalen Handelns besonders deutlich. Es betrifft aber das Gesamtmodell. Um die utilitaristische Verengung der TdFS zu uberwinden, wird der Vorschlag gemacht, die Logik der Situationsdefinition von der Logik der Handlungsselektion starker zu trennen. Die Definition der Situation folgt demnach nicht der Logik der Nutzenmaximierung, sondern der Logik der Wertbeziehung und der Wertgeltung. Beide ebenenspezifischen Selektionsprozesse bleiben aufeinander bezogen. Aber jede Ebene verfugt uber eine Eigenlogik, deren Verletzung zu Rationalitatsverlusten des Handelns fuhrt.

Logik der Situationsdefinition und Logik der Handlungsselektion

Drei neuere Ansatze zur Integration des wert-und zweckrationalen Handelns in ein handlungstheoretisches Modell werden untersucht. Gemeinsam ist den Vorschlagen von Raymond Boudon, Siegwart Lindenberg und Hartmut Esser, dass sie Rationalitat wesentlich als Begrundbarkeit verstehen. Im Gegensatz zu Boudon gehen Lindenberg und Esser aber davon aus, dass Rationalitat konsequentialistisch aufgefasst und in diesem Rahmen Webers Begriff der Wertrationalitat verstandlich gemacht werden kann, die ihrem Begriff nach eine Konsequenzenorientierung zunachst ausschliest. Lindenberg und Esser greifen dabei auf eine um framing-Annahmen erganzte Werterwartungstheorie zuruck. Dies ermogliche es, beide Handlungstypen in ein gemeinsames Modell zu integrieren, welches uber eine blose Handlungstypologie hinausgeht, nicht zuletzt deswegen, weil es auch erlaube, die Bedingungen zu spezifizieren, unter denen die Handlungstypen jeweils in den Vordergrund treten. Es wird gezeigt, dass die Ansatze von Lindenberg und Esser dieses Ziel noch nicht erreicht haben. Bei Lindenberg wird der Kontrast zwischen traditionalem und wertrationalem Handeln und der spezifische Begrundungsanspruch, mit dem das wertrationale Handeln verbunden ist, nicht adaquat entfaltet. Fur Essers Modell ergibt sich, dass es der Bewusstheit und dem Begrundungsanspruch des wertrationalen Handelns zwar Rechnung tragt, aber die Frage offen bleibt, ob sein Modell hinreichende Bedingungen fur wertrationales Handeln anzugeben vermag. Der Aufsatz schliest mit Uberlegungen dazu, ob eine Ableitung beider Handlungstypen aus einem Rationalitatskonzept sinnvoll denkbar ist.
