Use of and Awareness about Electronic Cigarette among Medical School Students

Electronic nicotine delivery systems, adolescent use, and nicotine addiction.

Vaping among adolescents is increasingly common and may result in poor health outcomes; however, little research has been conducted evaluating the risks of vaping among adolescents and the knowledge and perceptions that drive use. We must gain a better understanding of vaping outcomes and adolescents' perceptions while identifying potential ways to lessen or eradicate the health burdens associated with vaping. This knowledge could then inform robust educational and public health programs to prevent and mitigate vaping among youths. Health education incorporating a target populations' world view, spheres of influence, readiness, motivation, intention, and determination promotes informed decision making. There are few resources currently being allocated to the problem even though legislators and enforcement agencies are aware. We cannot simply rely on existing laws to serve as a sufficient deterrent to prevent underaged usage. Further efforts are needed in the areas of behavioral science, health education, and public policy to tackle this urgent public health concern.

Electronic cigarette or vaping use among adolescents in the United States: A call for research and legislative action

Introdução: O consumo de cigarro eletrônico (CE) aumentou por ser considerado menos agressivo que o cigarro tradicional. Entretanto, o conhecimento sobre esse dispositivo ainda é precário. Objetivo: Este estudo objetivou estimar a prevalência da percepção do conhecimento do CE e a associação com fatores preditores. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, analítico, com amostra probabilística de universitários do Centro Universitário de Montes Claros, Minas Gerais, no segundo semestre de 2022. A variável dependente referiu-se à percepção do conhecimento do CE. As variáveis independentes referiram a fatores sociodemográficos, laborais e comportamentais. A coleta de dados foi realizada na instituição, por pesquisadores, após autorização da instituição e aprovação do comitê de ética. A associação entre as variáveis e a prevalência do desconhecimento do CE foi verificada por meio da análise bivariada seguida da regressão de Poisson, com variância robusta. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 730 universitários com idade média de 22,56 (±6,25). Destes, 41,8% desconheciam o CE, e manteve-se associado aos acadêmicos matriculados em cursos da área humana (RP= 1,32 C 95%1,12-1,56). Os pais que usaram o CE (RP= 0,80 IC 95% (0,64-0,99), e se lhe oferecesse CE (RP= 0,42 IC 95% (0,29-0,60), foram considerados fatores protetores. Conclusão: Houve elevado desconhecimento sobre CE com associação ao curso, apontando para a necessidade de intervenções educativas que evidenciem os possíveis malefícios do consumo desse dispositivo.

The many factors to consider include the safety of these products, human health and behavior, and social effects. Healthcare providers need to be aware of these issues to provide appropriate education and care to adolescent patients.

Use of electronic nicotine delivery systems is flourishing among adolescents. The long-term effects have not been fully determined; however, literature suggests there is potential for significant harm. Providers must be aware of usage trends, device safety, and product knowledge. Adolescents should be evaluated through routine screening, and cessation counseling should be initiated.
