Orthodontists correct dental malocclusion, but major facial skeleton deformations (skeletal malocclusion) are often subject to surgical correction. Several speech pathologies are associated with both of the occlusal anomalies mentioned above. The majority of articulation disorders and primary functions cannot be improved without skeletal correction. This study aimed to investigate the outcome of the multimodal and logopaedics treatment of Polish adults affected by skeletal malocclusion and speech-language pathology. A total of 37 adults affected by skeletal Class II and III malocclusion were included, along with the relationship between the malocclusion and speech deficiency (20 phonemes tested) in the subjects before and after surgical correction. The impact of surgery on pronunciation improvement and types of Polish phonemes most often misarticulated by Polish adults were also examined. Patients underwent combined treatment and received a full speech pathology examination. The treatment improved speech (p < 0.05), but the study did not prove that a specific surgery type was associated with pronunciation improvement. Some patients were provided with speech therapy during childhood, yet most had some minor difficulties with lip and tongue movements. Palatal, alveolar (p < 0.05), fricatives (p < 0.05), and labiodental consonant pronunciation (p < 0.05) improved. The surgical correction of malocclusion leads to better articulation of Polish consonants in adults and improves some primary functions.

The Logopedic Evaluation of Adult Patients after Orthognathic Surgery

The purpose of this study was to document changes in social perceptions and facial esthetics, and document occlusion outcomes in a series of short face (SF) dentofacial deformity (DFD) subjects. The investigators hypothesized that subjects would achieve positive change in social perceptions and facial esthetics, and maintain a long-term corrected occlusion after undergoing bimaxillary and chin osteotomies.A retrospective cohort study was implemented. Photographic records and occlusion parameters were studied preoperatively and >2 years after surgery. The first outcome variable was social perceptions of SF subjects, judged by laypersons. The second outcome variable was facial esthetics, judged by professionals. The third outcome variable was occlusion maintained long-term.Fifteen subjects met inclusion criteria. Mean age at operation was 33 years. Consistent facial contour deformities at presentation included deficient maxillary dental show and downturned oral commissures. As a group, there was improvement (P < 0.05) in 11 of 12 social perceptions, judged by laypersons, all subjects achieved correction of the facial esthetic parameters studied by professionals, and all subjects maintained a favorable occlusion long-term.In SF DFD subjects, bimaxillary and chin surgery proved effective to improve social perceptions, to correct facial contour deformities, and in achieving a long-term corrected occlusion.

Short Face Dentofacial Deformities: Changes in Social Perceptions, Facial Esthetics, and Occlusion After Bimaxillary and Chin Orthognathic Correction.

Background and Aim: The curve of Spee (COS) is a physiological entity in human dentition. A functional masticatory system necessitates an appropriate occlusal curvature. The primary objective of this investigation was to assess the skeletal and dental parameters in individuals with variation in the depth of curve of Spee. Materials and Methods: A total of 276 patients with pre-treatment lateral cephalograms and dental cast models were investigated in the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Unit of a Tertiary Care Hospital of Mardan, Pakistan from January 2021 to December 2022. Patients with no prior history of orthopedic treatment for functional jaw, prosthodontic treatment, no prior history of cleft lip and palate and cranio-facial disorders were enrolled. Ethical approval was obtained and all the patients were categorized into three groups based on the depth of curve of Spee (COS):  Group-I (flat curvature < 2 mm), Group-II (normal curvature 2-3 mm), and Group-III (deep curvature > 3 mm). Lateral cephalometric analysiswas done to measure the four angular and four linear parameters. Molar relation, overbite, COS depth, and overjet were measured based on the occlusal classification. SPSS version 27 was used for data analysis.
