Compared with qualitative methods, quantitative methods can help detect and interpret patterns and regularities in translation history. However, quantitative methods rarely have been used in translation history research, mostly for lack of statistical data. The highly structured nature of bibliographical data and their availability make them an ideal data source for quantitative history. Drawing on the discipline of book history, this paper introduces bibliographical sources for quantitative translation history, presents techniques for retrieving, analyzing and presenting bibliographic data, reviews some existing quantitative studies related to translation history, and describes some of our own preliminary findings. Despite issues in data quality, the bibliography-based quantitative approach opens an avenue for investigating systematically how books were produced, translated and published, where they were distributed, and who was reading them.

Bibliography-based quantitative translation history

Next-generation catalogues can be viewed as the latest manifestation of a tendency in library catalogue history to strive for centralization of access to collections—a single portal for the discovery of library resources. Due to an increasing volume of published materials and the explosion of online information resources during the Internet age, the library does not currently provide centralized access to its various information silos, nor does it provide a user-friendly search and retrieval experience for users whose expectations are shaped by Google and other major commercial Web sites. Searching across library resources is a complicated task, bearing high-attention "transaction costs" for the user, which discourage the use of library resources. Libraries need access systems that minimize complexity, easing discovery and delivery of resources for user populations. Here, the authors review past efforts of centralization of access, consider the potential of next-generation catalogues in the context of this historical tendency toward centralization of access, and describe what goals underlie that centralization.

Old Hopes, New Possibilities: Next-Generation Catalogues and the Centralization of Access

In the historiography of librarianship and information work, the development of librarianship during the Belle Epoque (1871-1914) has been somewhat overshadowed by the heroic and ultimately unsuccessful projects of Otlet, the Royal Society, and others to bring about bibliographic control of the world’s scholarly literature. In this article, an attempt is made to determine the issues which preoccupied an emerging Anglo-American library profession during this period. It is based on evidence provided by a selection of British and American documents and events from the 1850s onwards which were influential at that time, including Britain’s Public Libraries Act of 1850; the first world’s fairs in the early 1850s; Edward Edward’s Free town libraries of 1869; the formative events surrounding the 1876 United States Centennial Exposition; Melvil Dewey’s School of Library Economy (established 1887); and James Duff Brown’s Manual of library economy of 1903. Librarians’ concerns at the turn of the twentieth century are discussed in relation to societal trends affecting the modernization and professionalization of librarianship.

Introducao : As contribuicoes de Andrew Maunsell influenciaram amplamente a concepcao de pontos de acesso as entradas dos catalogos das bibliotecas no transcurso dos anos, uma vez que muitas delas ainda estao em catalogos e nas regras de catalogacao anglo-americanas, como e o caso do cabecalho titular “Biblia”, empregado para reunir as entradas dessa obra no catalogo. Objetivo: Tracar o contexto historico do livreiro londrino, com o fim de conhecer como ele idealizou o cabecalho e como o empregou em seu tempo, e examinar historicamente como o cabecalho “Biblia” se efetivou nos catalogos e nas regras catalograficas posteriores, de modo a investigar como isso foi apropriado pela Catalogacao para representar a obra sagrada. Metodologia: Pesquisa bibliografica e documental. Resultados: A catalogacao foi incorporando subcabecalhos alusivos aos atributos da obra sagrada, os quais influenciaram a disposicao das entradas dessa obra em dimensao vertical e horizontal. Ademais, a partir do cabecalho “Biblia”, a catalogacao pode desenvolver o fundamento e os principios do titulo uniforme para representar outras obras. Isso nem sempre se deu coerentemente porque o titulo uniforme foi desestruturado por subcabecalhos estranhos a representacao da obra sagrada. Ante a essa situacao, modelos bibliograficos da catalogacao e a normativa “ Resource Description and Access ” (RDA) foram concebidos para reduzir as impropriedades da catalogacao, como as existentes nos subcabecalhos dessa obra. Conclusoes: A normativa RDA oferece meios de representar singularmente a Biblia nos pontos de acesso dos registros bibliograficos alusivos as publicacoes dessa obra, a despeito das ressalvas contornaveis que possam haver. Assim, Maunsell plantou essa e outras praticas catalograficas que foram regadas por aqueles que desenvolveram a catalogacao no transcurso dos anos.

Without such information, use of a library would be limited to browsing the shelves in hopes of finding materials of interest. Hanson and Daily trace the development of catalogs from ancient times to the middle of the twentieth century. In parallel they also trace the history of cataloging rules and principles through the many codes of practice that have been developed over the years. The authors’ speculation on what computerized catalogs might be like in the future, once developed, provides an interesting sidelight on the thinking of the era preceding the automation of catalogs
