In this work, military jet fuel JP-5 surrogates were formulated and tested in comparison to a nominal JP-5 fuel. Combustion experiments were conducted in an advanced engine technology (AET) ignition quality tester (IQT) and a Yanmar L100W Tier 4 diesel engine due to the potential use of jet fuel in diesel engines in military situations. The surrogate development process began with determining the fuel chemical composition based on analyses of 256 JP-5 fuel samples. The physical and chemical properties of density, viscosity, flash point, surface tension, speed of sound, and distillation behavior guided the selection of the surrogate components and their composition. JP-5 differs from other aviation fuels in its properties, but most importantly in flash point, which is higher for safety purposes. Surrogates were prepared from n-dodecane, n-butylbenzene, 1-methylnaphthalene, tetralin, trans-decalin, iso-cetane, and n-butylcyclohexane as representatives of seven of the nine major chemical categories found in jet fuel. The mass fraction of each compound in the surrogates that fell within the range for that chemical class was found in real JP-5 fuels. After optimizing the surrogates for physical and chemical properties, six surrogates were selected for combustion testing in the Yanmar diesel engine, one of which was specifically selected for a low-derived cetane number (DCN). This surrogate performed poorly in the Yanmar engine. Four of the remaining five surrogates performed similarly to the baseline JP-5 in the diesel engine in terms of values and variability of ignition delay, rate of heat release, peak pressure, and the crank angle at which 50% of the fuel is burned. Of the six surrogates tested, the best one in terms of physical properties, chemical properties, and combustion behavior was the one that contained 0.2421, 0.1503, 0.0500, 0.0141, 0.0121, 0.2532, and 0.2782 mass percentages of n-dodecane, n-butylbenzene, 1-methylnaphthalene, tetralin, trans-decalin, iso-cetane, and n-butylcyclohexane, respectively.

Formulation of 7-Component Surrogate Mixtures for Military Jet Fuel and Testing in Diesel Engine

Biodiesel is an environmentally beneficial and clean energy source that may replace fossil fuels, which are detrimental to the environment and cannot be replenished. Therefore, the physicochemical parameters of biodiesel must be determined in order to verify its quality. The cetane number is a crucial dimensionless fuel property that gauges the fuel ignition quality in power diesel engines. A higher cetane number results in a shorter ignition delay time, and vice versa. Biodiesel’s cetane number may fluctuate due to a variety of fatty acid compositions, including variations in carbon chain length and the degree of unsaturation. The cetane number generally increases with increasing saturation and chain length, while it decreases as chain length is reduced and degrees of unsaturation and branching increase. This is the main reason for why alkanes possess a higher cetane number than alkenes and aromatics. The standard protocols for evaluating the cetane number of biodiesel are ASTM D613 and ISO 5165 test techniques using a monocylindrical cetane engine. However, adhering to these conventional procedures is quite challenging and time-consuming, and the cetane number test result may also be affected by the presence of certain gases and fumes. As a result, many researchers are bothered with cetane number valuation, and occasionally they skip it due to a lack of other options. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to present a set of more straightforward and relevant alternative techniques that can be applied to predict the cetane number of biodiesel when engine-based measurement is not practical. The three techniques with their designed pictographic outlooks conferred in this article include color indicator titration, aniline point, and fatty acid composition-based methods. The reported values of these procedures meet the minimum cut point of the biodiesel cetane number required by ASTM D6751 (≥47) and exhibit minimal variation from the typical standard methods. Nevertheless, the above-mentioned techniques are not applicable to other alternative biofuels except biodiesel products because they have a direct implication on the characteristics of the fatty acid profiles of different oil precursors, such as carbon chain length, degree of saturation or unsaturation, and aromaticity, which make up monoalkyl esters.

The engine performance and emission characteristics of burning emulsions of soybean oil biodiesel in a compression-ignition diesel engine prepared through the phase inversion temperature method were compared with those of neat soybean oil biodiesel and the emulsion prepared by the mechanical homogenization method. The engine torque was set constantly at 98 N·m with varying engine speeds. The experimental results show that the emulsion prepared by the method of phase inversion temperature had higher O2 and NOx emissions, a higher excess air ratio, a higher exhaust gas temperature, and a higher brake fuel conversion efficiency than the emulsion prepared by the mechanical homogenization method, which had lower CO and CO2 emissions, a lower equivalence ratio, and lower brake-specific fuel consumption. While the neat soybean oil biodiesel was found to have the lowest fuel consumption rate, brake-specific fuel consumption, and CO and CO2 emissions, it had the highest exhaust gas temperature and brake fuel conversion efficiency, NOx and O2 emissions, and excess air ratio among those three fuels. Therefore, the phase inversion temperature method is considered promising for preparing fuel emulsions as an alternative to petro-derived diesel for compression-ignition engines.

 In the past, the Navy has investigated new renewable diesel engine fuels in comparison to conventional petroleum-based fuels using some previously published combustion metrics based on ignition delay, maximum rate of heat release and combustion phasing. These metrics quantify new fuel combustion changes using a conventional heat release analysis as compared to the base fuel. When combustion changes exceed established levels, fuel may be deemed marginal or unacceptable. In this study, these metrics are applied to Primary Reference diesel Fuel (PRF) mixtures in the range from 35 to 65. As expected, significant combustion variations are observed with lengthening ignition delay and increasing maximum heat release rate resulting from lower Cetane Number (CN) fuel. In this work, these steady-state metrics were then applied to predict the worsening of cold start engine performance. It is seen that the acceptable (‘green’) range of combustion change variations provides for acceptable cold engine starting performance. As the steady-state combustion changes become moderately more significant (‘yellow’), the cold start performance degrades. With very substantial steady-state combustion metric changes (‘red’), the cold start nature becomes unacceptable. This study shows that excellent correlation between steady-state engine performance and cold start behavior is possible.
