Aim: The research aim to study the change to characteristics of the socio-ecological system of the mountain regions of Georgia. Methodology: Research methods included geographic, cartographic, ecosystem, and landscape research methodology, landscape-ecological analysis and synthesis methods, and social-ecological systems concepts. Results: The results showed the following: Ecological characteristics of medium and high mountain natural landscapes and ecosystems within the Central Caucasus (Georgia's historical-geographical province of Pshav-Khevsureti); Main forms of cultural landscape, their economic and social values of the mountain region; Environmental protection of the local population, ethics and environmental history and the ecological, economic, and social culture of the population of the mountain region. Interpretation: In the mountainous regions of Georgia, there is a high potential for creating cultural landscapes, based on the results of the long-term and effective interdependence of man and nature. Cultural landscapes, depending on their importance, will further increase the sustainability of the socio-ecological system of mountainous regions. Socio-ecological system of the mountainous region: A case study from Georgia

The article discusses the essence of integrative geography and its importance for the theory and practice of geographical science. Such areas of integrative geography are characterized, the development of which will further increase the importance of applied geographical science. They include teaching about cultural landscape and historical landscape (part of landscape studies), geoecological expertise and environmental impact assessment (part of geographic ecology), geographic archeology and ecological culture (part of historical geography), landscape management and landscape services (part of landscape planning), tourism—Assessment and planning of recreational resources (part of recreational geography).

Integrative geography—Current issues in theory and practice (on the example of the Georgian geographical school)

The features of Georgian cultural heritage landscape formation and their planning principles are discussed in the article. It focuses on the forms of harmonious coexistence of society and nature in Georgia, historical and cultural landscapes, outstanding units of cultural heritage, traditions of grain crops (wheat) and viticulture (vines) in Georgia. Special attention was paid to the planning principles of the Georgian cultural landscape, of which the principle of relevance, socio-economic tension and legal regulations are important. The study of cultural heritage landscape in Georgia is in the initial stage. Therefore, the opinions expressed in the article will contribute to increasing the motivation of Georgian geographers in solving the mentioned problem. 

Heritage Landscape and Historical Context – Essence and Principles of Planning in Georgia

AbstractThe natural diversity of Georgia is unique in the world, especially—in the subtropical and temperate zones. More than seven dozen natural landscapes have been created here, starting in the humid subtropical or semi-fertile wooded forests, ending in wetlands and semi-wetlands landscapes. Georgia, despite its small territory, is distinguished by the diversity of the living world, as well as natural and cultural landscapes. Such diversity makes it difficult to study the geographical-ecological (geo-ecological) features of the country, to fully reveal the cultural modifications of the landscapes. According to the UNESCO nomination, 12 types of cultural landscapes are known in the world. Their total number reaches 120, according to which Europe stands out. Almost half of the cultural landscapes are represented here. Among the countries in the world, France and Italy lead in the number of cultural landscapes (8–8 units), followed by Great Britain, Germany, China (5–5 units), Portugal and Spain (4–4 cultural landscapes). No cultural landscape has been created in Georgia under UNESCO status. However, Georgia is known in the world as the homeland of wine and wheat, a country of ancient culture and traditions, an attractive geographical area with natural and landscape diversity. The article discusses the definition of cultural landscape, its essence, types and their geographical features.
