Industry 4.0 aims to ensure the future competitiveness of the manufacturing industry by providing Companies with the ability to react to rapid product changes and disturbances, efficiently and reliably, through re-configurability. In this paper, we explore the value creation process within Industry 4.0, with special emphasis on its relationship with mass customization and the sustainability issue. Based on the identified research gaps and opportunities derived from a literature review of relevant concepts, we propose the development of the Customer-Product-Process-Resource (CPPR) 4.0, a comprehensive framework that puts the value proposition-creation-capture cycle proper of an Industry 4.0 environment, in the context of a manufacturing organization’s customer-product-process-resources views. The usefulness of the proposed framework is exemplified by using it to derive system dynamics model of the mass customization paradigm. A discussion of the managerial implications of the obtained results for both the sustainability and the case of Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is offered at the end of the paper.

Service agreements are one of a kind, and commit the service providers to certain configuration, execution and delivery of their processes and resources over a long time To improve productivity, the providers need a way to mass-customise the service they produce while the customers need to be able to evaluate and benchmark the service they obtain The field lacks sufficient results to allow either party to construct the agreements with the efficiency and effectiveness they need The mass customisation model of manufacturing can help solve the problem; however, to achieve this goal, new and comprehensive understanding of service production is required Therefore, a reference model of service agreement engineering to help mass-customise and evaluate service agreements is developed for, first, manufacturing-based and, then, nonmanufacturing- based products The reference model provides the static knowledge on the structuring of service processes and resources and the dynamic assessment of their costs and risks, useful for both providers and customers The observer–participant method is used to develop and test the model with the Power Systems Division, Aircraft Engines Division and Transportation Systems Division of General Electric Corporation Ongoing work generalises it for IT outsourcing and other non-manufacturing-based service agreements The results hold promise for generalisation into other service products, such as facilitating the application service providers of ebusiness to host many different, custom processes provided to its clientele on a common base of resources

Disruption in the US machine tool industry: The role of inhouse users and pre-disruption component experience in firm response

Digital Twins (DTs) are one of the disruptive technologies associated with the Industry 4.0 concept. A DT connects the physical manufacturing system with the digital cyberspace, via the synchronization of the simulation (i.e., physical configurations) and data models (i.e., product, process, and resource models) of the manufacturing system. This synchronization of both worlds—the physical and digital—allows one to address the issue of manufacturing customized products. This challenge of mass customization (1) puts forward the goal of achieving the highest level of customer satisfaction, and (2) creates the need for the optimization of the complete value creation process. Within an Industry 4.0 context, the latter is translated as the interlinking of production resources and systems, via a DT, as it is in the physical world where the actual value-creation process takes place. The success of an Industry 4.0 mass customization environment (or mass customization 4.0), depends on its degree/level of sustainability. For these reasons, the present paper presents a review of relevant concepts related to the role of DTs in the achievement of a mass customization 4.0 environment, plus some proposals of how to address the identified research challenges. A future research agenda is proposed at the end of the paper.

Core information model: a practical solution to costly integration problems

The past decades have seen significant research and practice on new information technology for manufacturing enterprises, including computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), concurrent engineering (CE), and agile manufacturing. The ideal is always a pursuit of adaptively integrated design, manufacturing, and business processes linking the parts fabrication, factory production, and product development cycles for the enterprise. The linkage developed thus far, however, tends to be one-directional. For instance, it was emphasized that the manufacturing requirements should be incorporated into design at the design stage which is clearly separated from manufacturing (design for manufacturing). It was not considered that many dynamic enterprises such as original equipment manufacturing (OEM) require a two-directional or even parallel pipelining between design and manufacturing where the feedback of manufacturing to design will be continuous and ongoing, and will be conducted on a real-time and online basis. In such settings, the manufacturing constraints often dominate the design choices and hence drive design. To support this manufacturing-driven design process, a new information technology feeding manufacturing databases back to design systems is required. We propose a new workflow process control system using the metadatabase technology to achieve this end. The new system requires a novel modeling effort to determine the workflow processes and their control knowledge involved so as to connect the traditional technologies (workflow management, knowledge-based systems, and manufacturing and design databases) in the metadatabase model.
