This paper focuses on understanding distributed leadership and professional learning communities (PLCs). Through an Australian Government grant, the Teacher Education Done Differently (TEDD) project, data were analysed from 25 school executives about distributed leadership as a potential for influencing educational change through forums such as PLCs. Findings will be discussed in relation to: (1) Understanding the nature of a PLC, (2) Leadership within PLCs, (3) Advancing PLCs, and (4) PLCs as forums for capacity building a profession. A cyclic model for facilitating PLCs is presented, where information such as issues and problems are brought to the collective, discussed and analysed openly to provide further feedback. There are implications for leaders to up-skill staff on distributed leadership practices and further research required to determine which practices facilitate successful PLCs.

Stopping the run-around: addressing Aboriginal community people's mental health and alcohol and drug comorbidity service needs in the Salisbury and Playford local government areas of South Australia

The chapter examines the development of social contribution indicators in Chinese higher education. After launching the analysis, the chapter examines how social engagement contributions are being reframed in Chinese higher education. The discussion moves to looking at the curation of recent policy research which has sought to design novel information which has the potential to illuminate and guide growth. The final section evaluates progress so far, and options for further development. The chapter synthesizes theoretical perspectives, contributes an evaluation framework, and articulates contemporary circumstances in the world’s largest higher education system.

Evaluating University Social Contribution: Insights and Concepts from Chinese Higher Education

Vibrant, relevant and enduring community engagement is a common goal for Australian universities and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has held a long-term commitment to the wider community, building a reputation as a university for the ‘real world’. However, there is awareness within the university sector that in order to be relevant community engagement needs to be continuously renewed. Also, there is a growing willingness within the business community to build social responsibility. Increasing pro-bono work within the legal profession is an example of this movement. 

To satisfy changing community and student learning needs, the QUT Faculty of Law is developing a virtual model of work-integrated learning to renew and strengthen partnerships with the wider community. The virtual work-integrated learning model will enable students to assist the legal and business community with these endeavours while enhancing their learning experience. The model will thereby balance the needs of community partners and also engage student learners. The virtual platform proposed will enable students to engage meaningfully with local, national and international community partners. This model should successfully embed QUT’s core business of teaching and learning within a community engagement framework. The model is to be introduced into the curriculum in Semester 2, 2008 and will be evaluated and reviewed from both the university and the community perspectives from Semester 1, 2009. 

The theory and literature of the fields of ‘work-integrated learning’ and ‘community engagement’ and the interaction between the fields of ‘work-integrated learning’ and ‘community engagement’ are analysed. The university context will be examined along with the need to balance student learning objectives and community needs. The paper proposes a ‘virtual’ model of WIL that is being designed to meet the rapidly changing nature of the modern workplace and twenty-first century student learning preferences.

Community Engagement through a model of Virtual Work-integrated Learning

The issue of University engagement with the community is prominent on the agendas of both national and international forums of higher education. Increasingly, universities are playing an integral role in their regions, contributing to the sustainability, wellbeing and economic vitality of their communities while becoming catalysts for positive change and development.

Recognition of the role of higher education institutions in social, economic and cultural development has led to the formation of the Australian Universities Community Engagement Alliance (AUCEA). AUCEA is auspiced by the University of Western Sydney (UWS) and guided by a Steering Committee made up of 10 Australian University representatives.

With a vision to be the leading inclusive national forum for the discussion and development of university community engagement, encouraging collaboration, innovation, the exchange of knowledge and the scholarship of engagement, AUCEA has undertaken a national leadership role to:
•	Raise awareness and disseminate best practice in university community
engagement;
•	Facilitate collaborative research in university community engagement between
AUCEA members and their communities;
•	Promote the integration of engagement into curriculum and the student experience;
•	Promote the recognition of the scholarship of engagement as a valid pedagogy; and
•	Collaboratively develop resources that support university community engagement.

AUCEA enables Australian Universities to both share and create knowledge about community engagement. Ultimately the process, which is developing trust between universities, will create an effective centre for dialogue and research into university community engagement and place the scholarship of engagement on the national agenda.

For this to be achieved AUCEA will need to firmly establish itself as the peak body for university community engagement nationally. The Alliance has already gained endorsement by the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee, but it requires full commitment, through institutional and individual membership, financially and otherwise and essentially by the majority of Australian universities. AUCEA’s services and resources will need to be in demand and valued by the clients it seeks to serve. AUCEA’s effectiveness will rely on its ability to achieve scholarly recognition for its activities and outputs. Its long-term future will depend on AUCEA’s ability to become fully sustainable with both national and international acceptance and recognition
