A model of commumcations protocols based on finite-state machines is investigated. The problem addressed is how to ensure certain generally desirable properties, which make protocols \"wellformed,\" that is, specify a response to those and only those events that can actually occur. On Communicating Finite-State Machines

For applications relying on the transfer of multimedia, and in particular continuous media, it is essential that quality of service (QoS) is guaranteed system-wide, including end-systems, communications systems and networks. Although researchers have addressed many isolated areas of QoS provision, little attention has so far been paid to the definition of an integrated and coherent framework that incorporates QoS interfaces, management and mechanisms across all architectural layers. To address this deficiency, we are developing a Quality of Service Architecture (QoS-A) which offers a framework to specify and implement the required performance properties of multimedia applications over high-performance ATM-based networks. The QoS-A incorporates the notions of flow, service contract and flow management. Flows characterise the production, transmission and eventual consumption of single media streams, service contracts are binding agreements between users and providers and flow management provides for the monitoring and maintenance of the contracted QoS levels. This paper provides an overview of the QoS-A and focuses particularly on the role of the transport service and protocol in the architecture. We describe a multimedia enhanced transport service (METS), flow management and transport layer service contract. We show how QoS levels contracted at the transport service interface can be assured in the context of our local ATM environment.

Distributed multimedia and QOS: a survey

We introduce RATEWeb, a framework for establishing trust in service-oriented environments. RATEWeb supports a cooperative model in which Web services share their experiences of the service providers with their peers through feedback ratings. The different ratings are aggregated to derive a service provider's reputation. This in turn is used to evaluate trust. The overall goal of RATEWeb is to facilitate trust-based selection and composition of Web services. We propose a set of decentralized techniques that aim at accurately aggregating the submitted ratings for reputation assessment. We conduct experiments to assess the fairness and accuracy of the proposed techniques.

RATEWeb: Reputation Assessment for Trust Establishment among Web services

While early protocol design efforts had to rely largely on seat-of-the-pants methods, a variety of more rigorous techniques have been developed recently. This paper surveys the formal methods being applied to the problems of protocol specification, verification, and implementation. In the specification area, both the service that a protocol layer provides to its users and the internal operations of the entities that compose the layer must be defined. Verification then consists of a demonstration that the layer will meet its service specification and that each of the components is correctly implemented. Formal methods for accomplishing these tasks are discussed, including state transition models, program verification, symbolic execution, and design rules.

Formal Methods in Communication Protocol Design

Verification of communication protocols usually involves two parts: a state-machine analysis of the control structure and proving some assertions about the semantic content of the protocol' s actions. The two parts are traditionally, treated separately. This paper suggests that the two approaches are not independent but rather complementary. It intro duces a unified model for protocols (and generally cooperating distant subsystems) encompassing both aspects. The method is demonstrated on three different descriptions of the same protocol, each with a different tradeoff between state machine and programming aspects. Verification of partial and full correctness is carried out in terms of the three descriptions.

A Unified Method for the Specification and Verification of Protocols.

The real-time requirements of continuous media call for careful resource management in distributed multimedia systems. In complex and mobile systems, however, effective resource reservation becomes almost impossible. Recent research suggests adaptive applications as a complementary solution. This article reviews heterogeneous networks and the rationale behind adaptation, gives implementation examples, and discusses some outstanding research issues.

The need to add an automatic learning phase to the construction process of a knowledge base is stressed. This work introduces a new technique based on machine learning methodologies which automatically creates a particular knowledge representation structure called knowledge space, from which common generalizations of knowledge objects may be efficiently inferred. Also introduced are some of the improved and added processing capabilities made possible by this structure. >

Structuring knowledge bases using automatic learning

Approaches to a functional and a computational architecture for distributed multimedia presentational applications are developed. These approaches are illustrated by a case study, a multimedia news-on-demand service. The concept of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters is seen to determine the new characteristics of distributed multimedia applications. Accordingly the computational architecture for distributed multimedia presentational applications is developed in a QoS driven way within the the framework of the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing. The concept of QoS interfaces is introduced in order to handle the QoS negotiation in a general and generic way. Objects in a distributed multimedia application can negotiate their QoS parameters through these QoS interfaces. Using this approach, variants of QoS negotiation protocols are investigated.
