Despite the increasing prevalence of foamed concrete (FC) in many applications within the construction sector, there is a discernible scarcity of comprehensive evaluations of its performance. Most research efforts are directed towards investigating the integration of industrial wastes in normal weight concrete. Hence, it is crucial to comprehend the performance properties of FC concerning industrial waste. This study focused on investigating the effects of replacing sand with glass sheet powder (GSP) on the fresh, mechanical, thermal and microstructural properties of FC. Various replacement ratios, ranging from 0% to 50%, were considered. The mechanical properties, including the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths, were evaluated at different curing ages. Microstructural analysis was performed using scanning electron microscopy to observe the formation of the microstructure in the FC in the presence of GSP. Additionally, the thermal properties, such as thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat capacity, were determined using the hot guarded plate test method. At 20% replacement ratio, results show that the mechanical properties greatly improved. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strengths increased by up to 18%, 40%, and 33%, respectively. However, further increases in the replacement ratio did not yield substantial improvements. Thermal properties of FC were improved with the presence of GSP. The test results also exhibited that the sorptivity, porosity, and water absorption decreased with the incorporation of GSP. The outcomes of this study emphasize the potential advantages of integrating GSP into FC, which has the ability to enhance the overall properties of FC. 

Development of eco-friendly foamed concrete with waste glass sheet powder for mechanical, thermal, and durability properties enhancement

By enhancing the thermal properties of cement-based building materials, energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions related to space conditioning in buildings can be alleviated. This study aims to present cement-based composites reinforced by textile fibers for application in building and construction. Several lightweight coating mortars were produced by partially replacing the sand in the mix with different percentages of textile waste. Mechanical and thermal characterizations of the reinforced cementitious composites were performed. The results showed that the thermal conductivity of cementitious compounds decreased as the proportion of reinforcing material in the mixture increased. In terms of mechanical properties, the textile slightly reduced the compressive strength of cementitious mortar, while it improved the flexural strength. A numerical study was then performed to derive the actual impact of these reinforced materials on the thermal behavior of a building element using COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerous configurations of walls coated with different mortar mixtures were studied. The results showed that coating both sides of a building wall with 20 mm of textile-reinforced mortar reduced the internal temperature by 1.5 °C. Thus, the application of these thermally improved mortars as coating mortars appears to be a relevant solution to enhance the thermal performance of buildings.

Behavior and properties of ultra-lightweight concrete with foamed glass aggregate and cellulose fibres under high temperature loading

Organic solvents are vital in chemical synthesis, storage, and separation processes. However, the widespread use of these solvents in industries and research laboratories raises concerns regarding their high volatility, lipophilicity, and toxicity, which pose significant risks to the surroundings and human well-being. In light of these issues, Deep eutectic solvents which is known as a green solvent have become a promising substitute with the potential to alleviate these concerns. DESs have shown remarkable progress in production and manufacturing across various fields. Extensive work investigated the dissolution of renewable materials, mainly cellulose, in multiple solvents, thereby bringing DESs to the forefront of scientific inquiry. These DESs have greatly improved production and manufacturing processes in diverse industries. However, it is important to note that DESs have considerably lower levels of cellulose solubility for edible biocomposites. Cellulose derived from edible fibers finds extensive applications in food and beverage, agriculture, cosmetics, textiles, medical and pharmaceutical industries, agro-industries, and furniture industries. This review includes a comparative analysis of various DES-based solvents, which addresses concern pertaining to the toxicity of DESs, outlines essential properties to consider when selecting DESs for diverse applications, and highlights recent advancements in the fields of extraction media, biofilm production, nanomaterial synthesis, composite material manufacturing, and plasticizer applications. 

Cellulose dissolution for edible biocomposites in deep eutectic solvents: A review

In recent years, energy conservation became a strategic goal to preserve the environment, foster sustainability, and preserve valuable natural resources. The building sector is considered one of the largest energy consumers globally. Therefore, insulation plays a vital role in mitigating the energy consumption of the building sector. This study provides an overview of various organic and inorganic insulation materials, recent trends in insulation systems, and their applications, advantages, and disadvantages, particularly those suitable for extreme climates. Moreover, natural and composite materials that can be used as a low-cost, thermally efficient, and sustainable option for thermal insulation are discussed along with their thermal properties-associated problems, and potential solutions that could be adopted to utilize natural and sustainable options. Finally, the paper highlights factors affecting thermal performance and essential considerations for choosing a particular insulation system for a particular region. It is concluded that the most commonly used insulation materials are found to have several associated problems and there is a strong need to utilize sustainable materials along with advanced materials such as aerogels to develop novel composite insulation materials to overcome these deficiencies. 

A Comprehensive Review and Recent Trends in Thermal Insulation Materials for Energy Conservation in Buildings

This study is devoted to the possibility of using advanced insulation materials, such as Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIP), in the insulation and reconstruction of buildings, in connection with the green elements that are installed on the facade in the case of the use of external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS). The use of VIP as part of the insulation system will result in a significant reduction in the required thickness of the insulation layer. In turn, the reduced overall thickness of the system will allow for easier direct anchoring of the elements of the green facade through the insulating layer to the base of the structure. The research carried out proves that, by using VIP in the insulation system (with a VIP thickness of 30 mm in combination with 20 mm of extruded polystyrene XPS), the thermal insulation properties can be significantly improved and, thus, the thickness of the insulation system can be reduced to 1/3 of the thickness of conventional insulation (while achieving the same thermal resistance), thereby enabling the anchoring of green elements on the surface of such an insulation system.

The Use of Advanced Environmentally Friendly Systems in the Insulation and Reconstruction of Buildings

This study addresses the issue of the resistance to high temperatures of lightweight concrete lightweighted with sintered fly ash aggregate. Lightweight concretes with different amounts of lightweighting and their properties after loading temperatures of 600, 800 and 1000 °C were investigated. In particular, the effect of high temperature on the mechanical properties of the concrete was determined on the test specimens, and the effect on the microstructure was investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that there is an increase in compressive strength between 0 and 21% up to 800 °C, where the increase in strength decreases with increasing degree of lightening. At 1000 °C, the internal structure of the lightweight concrete destabilized, and the compressive strength decreased in the range of 51–65%. After loading at 1000 °C, the scanning electron microscope showed the formation of spherical-shaped neoplasms, which significantly reduced the internal integrity of the cement matrix in the lightweight concrete due to the increase in their volume. It was found that the lightweight concretes with higher lightweighting showed significantly less degradation due to higher temperature.

Use of Lightweight Sintered Fly Ash Aggregates in Concrete at High Temperatures

Abstract The use of super insulating materials in the construction industry, including vacuum insulation, closely corresponds to the ever-increasing requirements for the construction of low-energy and passive buildings. Their indisputable advantage is their excellent thermal insulation properties at low thickness compared to conventional thermal insulation materials. However, there are also many risks associated with the experience and practice of the personnel involved in the application of these materials to structures. The paper focuses on the overall comparison of the possible use of vacuum insulation panels in modern building structures in terms of possible design solutions and achieved properties. The paper presents the results of selected case studies of the optimal use of vacuum insulation panels (VIP) in the construction industry, which are focused on different areas of building structures, specifically on the detail of the transition of the terrace and the adjacent floor, as well as on the solution of the filling of openings - doors. Based on the results of the studies carried out, it can be concluded that, provided that all procedures for maintaining the VIP properties are followed in the implementation of these materials in structures, vacuum insulations represent a more suitable solution for structural details in selected details (less thickness and comparable thermal insulation properties compared to conventional insulations).
