Planets form and obtain their compositions in dust and gas-rich disks around young stars, and the outcome of this process is intimately linked to the disk chemical properties. The distributions of molecules across disks regulate the elemental compositions of planets, including C/N/O/S ratios and metallicity (O/H and C/H), as well as access to water and prebiotically relevant organics. Emission from molecules also encodes information on disk ionization levels, temperature structures, kinematics, and gas surface densities, which are all key ingredients of disk evolution and planet formation models. The Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS) ALMA Large Program was designed to expand our understanding of the chemistry of planet formation by exploring disk chemical structures down to 10 au scales. The MAPS program focuses on five disks - around IM Lup, GM Aur, AS 209, HD 163296, and MWC 480 - in which dust substructures are detected and planet formation appears to be ongoing. We observed these disks in 4 spectral setups, which together cover ~50 lines from over 20 different species. This paper introduces the ApJS MAPS Special Issue by presenting an overview of the program motivation, disk sample, observational details, and calibration strategy. We also highlight key results, including discoveries of links between dust, gas, and chemical sub-structures, large reservoirs of nitriles and other organics in the inner disk regions, and elevated C/O ratios across most disks. We discuss how this collection of results is reshaping our view of the chemistry of planet formation.

Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS). I. Program Overview and Highlights

The Hayabusa2 spacecraft collected samples from the surface of the carbonaceous near-Earth asteroid (162173) Ryugu and brought them to Earth. The samples were expected to contain organic molecules, which record processes that occurred in the early Solar System. We analyzed organic molecules extracted from the Ryugu surface samples. We identified a variety of molecules containing the atoms CHNOS, formed by methylation, hydration, hydroxylation, and sulfurization reactions. Amino acids, aliphatic amines, carboxylic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and nitrogen-heterocyclic compounds were detected, which had properties consistent with an abiotic origin. These compounds likely arose from an aqueous reaction on Ryugu’s parent body and are similar to the organics in Ivuna-type meteorites. These molecules can survive on the surfaces of asteroids and be transported throughout the Solar System. Description INTRODUCTION Surface material from the near-Earth carbonaceous (C-type) asteroid (162173) Ryugu was collected and brought to Earth by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Ryugu is a dark, primitive asteroid containing hydrous minerals that are similar to the most hydrated carbonaceous meteorites. C-type asteroids are common in the asteroid belt and have been proposed as the parent bodies of carbonaceous meteorites. The samples of Ryugu provide an opportunity to investigate organic compounds for comparison with those from carbonaceous meteorites. Unlike meteorites, the Ryugu samples were collected and delivered for study under controlled conditions, reducing terrestrial contamination and the effects of atmospheric entry. RATIONALE Primitive carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are known to contain a variety of soluble organic molecules (SOMs), including prebiotic molecules such as amino acids. Meteorites might have delivered amino acids and other prebiotic organic molecules to the early Earth and other rocky planets. Organic matter in the Ryugu samples is the product of physical and chemical processes that occurred in the interstellar medium, the protosolar nebula, and/or on the planetesimal that became Ryugu’s parent body. We investigated SOMs in Ryugu samples principally using mass spectrometry coupled with liquid or gas chromatography. RESULTS We identified numerous organic molecules in the Ryugu samples. Mass spectroscopy detected hundreds of thousands of ion signals, which we assigned to ~20,000 elementary compositions consisting of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and/or sulfur. Fifteen amino acids, including glycine, alanine, and α-aminobutyric acid, were identified. These were present as racemic mixtures (equal right- and left-handed abundances), consistent with an abiotic origin. Aliphatic amines (such as methylamine) and carboxylic acids (such as acetic acid) were also detected, likely retained on Ryugu as organic salts. The presence of aromatic hydrocarbons, including alkylbenzenes, fluoranthene, and pyrene, implies hydrothermal processing on Ryugu’s parent body and/or presolar synthesis in the interstellar medium. Nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds were identified as their alkylated homologs, which could have been synthesized from simple aldehydes and ammonia. In situ analysis of a grain surface showed heterogeneous spatial distribution of alkylated homologs of nitrogen- and/or oxygen-containing compounds. CONCLUSION The wide variety of molecules identified indicates that prolonged chemical processes contributed to the synthesis of soluble organics on Ryugu or its parent body. The highly diverse mixture of SOMs in the samples resembles that seen in some carbonaceous chondrites. However, the SOM concentration in Ryugu is less than that in moderately aqueously altered CM (Mighei-type) chondrites, being more similar to that seen in warm aqueously altered CI (Ivuna-type) chondrites. The chemical diversity with low SOM concentration in Ryugu is consistent with aqueous organic chemistry at modest temperatures on Ryugu’s parent asteroid. The samples collected from the surface of Ryugu were exposed to the hard vacuum of space, energetic particle irradiation, heating by sunlight, and micrometeoroid impacts, but the SOM is still preserved, likely by being associated with minerals. The presence of prebiotic molecules on the asteroid surface suggests that these molecules can be transported throughout the Solar System. SOMs detected in surface samples of asteroid Ryugu. Soluble organic molecules in samples of the carbonaceous asteroid (162173) Ryugu

The Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS) Large Program provides a detailed, high resolution (${\sim}$10-20 au) view of molecular line emission in five protoplanetary disks at spatial scales relevant for planet formation. Here, we present a systematic analysis of chemical substructures in 18 molecular lines toward the MAPS sources: IM Lup, GM Aur, AS 209, HD 163296, and MWC 480. We identify more than 200 chemical substructures, which are found at nearly all radii where line emission is detected. A wide diversity of radial morphologies - including rings, gaps, and plateaus - is observed both within each disk and across the MAPS sample. This diversity in line emission profiles is also present in the innermost 50 au. Overall, this suggests that planets form in varied chemical environments both across disks and at different radii within the same disk. Interior to 150 au, the majority of chemical substructures across the MAPS disks are spatially coincident with substructures in the millimeter continuum, indicative of physical and chemical links between the disk midplane and warm, elevated molecular emission layers. Some chemical substructures in the inner disk and most chemical substructures exterior to 150 au cannot be directly linked to dust substructure, however, which indicates that there are also other causes of chemical substructures, such as snowlines, gradients in UV photon fluxes, ionization, and radially-varying elemental ratios. This implies that chemical substructures could be developed into powerful probes of different disk characteristics, in addition to influencing the environments within which planets assemble. Molecules with ALMA at Planet-forming Scales (MAPS). III. Characteristics of Radial Chemical Substructures

Quantifying the composition of the material in protoplanetary disks is essential to determining the potential for exoplanetary systems to produce and support habitable environments. When considering potential habitability, complex organic molecules are relevant, key among which is methanol (CH3OH). Methanol primarily forms at low temperatures via the hydrogenation of CO ice on the surface of icy dust grains and is a necessary basis for the formation of more complex species such as amino acids and proteins. We report the detection of CH3OH in a disk around a young, luminous A-type star, HD 100546. This disk is warm and therefore does not host an abundant reservoir of CO ice. We argue that the CH3OH cannot form in situ, and hence that this disk has probably inherited complex-organic-molecule-rich ice from an earlier cold dark cloud phase. This is strong evidence that at least some interstellar organic material survives the disk-formation process and can then be incorporated into forming planets, moons and comets. Therefore, crucial pre-biotic chemical evolution already takes place in dark star-forming clouds.

An inherited complex organic molecule reservoir in a warm planet-hosting disk

The chemical composition of planets is inherited from that of the natal protoplanetary disk at the time of planet formation. Increasing observational evidence suggests that planet formation occurs in less than 1−2 Myr. This motivates the need for spatially resolved spectral observations of young Class I disks, as carried out by the ALMA chemical survey of Disk-Outflow sources in Taurus (ALMA-DOT). In the context of ALMA-DOT, we observe the edge-on disk around the Class I source IRAS 04302+2247 (the butterfly star) in the 1.3 mm continuum and five molecular lines. We report the first tentative detection of methanol (CH3 OH) in a Class I disk and resolve, for the first time, the vertical structure of a disk with multiple molecular tracers. The bulk of the emission in the CO 2−1, CS 5−4, and o–H2 CO 31, 2  − 21, 1 lines originates from the warm molecular layer, with the line intensity peaking at increasing disk heights, z , for increasing radial distances, r . Molecular emission is vertically stratified, with CO observed at larger disk heights (aperture z /r  ∼ 0.41−0.45) compared to both CS and H2 CO, which are nearly cospatial (z /r  ∼ 0.21−0.28). In the outer midplane, the line emission decreases due to molecular freeze-out onto dust grains (freeze-out layer) by a factor of > 100 (CO) and 15 (CS). The H2 CO emission decreases by a factor of only about 2, which is possibly due to H2 CO formation on icy grains, followed by a nonthermal release into the gas phase. The inferred [CH3 OH]/[H2 CO] abundance ratio is 0.5−0.6, which is 1−2 orders of magnitude lower than for Class 0 hot corinos, and a factor ∼2.5 lower than the only other value inferred for a protoplanetary disk (in TW Hya, 1.3−1.7). Additionally, it is at the lower edge but still consistent with the values in comets. This may indicate that some chemical reprocessing occurs in disks before the formation of planets and comets.

ALMA chemical survey of disk-outflow sources in Taurus (ALMA-DOT) - II. Vertical stratification of CO, CS, CN, H2CO, and CH3OH in a Class I disk

H₂CO is one of the most abundant organic molecules in protoplanetary disks and can serve as a precursor to more complex organic chemistry. We present an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array survey of H₂CO toward 15 disks covering a range of stellar spectral types, stellar ages, and dust continuum morphologies. H₂CO is detected toward 13 disks and tentatively detected toward a fourteenth. We find both centrally peaked and centrally depressed emission morphologies, and half of the disks show ring-like structures at or beyond expected CO snowline locations. Together these morphologies suggest that H₂CO in disks is commonly produced through both gas-phase and CO-ice-regulated grain-surface chemistry. We extract disk-averaged and azimuthally-averaged H₂CO excitation temperatures and column densities for four disks with multiple H₂CO line detections. The temperatures are between 20–50 K, with the exception of colder temperatures in the DM Tau disk. These temperatures suggest that H₂CO emission in disks generally emerges from the warm molecular layer, with some contributions from the colder midplane. Applying the same H₂CO excitation temperatures to all disks in the survey, we find that H₂CO column densities span almost three orders of magnitude (~5 × 10¹¹–5 × 10¹⁴ cm⁻²). The column densities appear uncorrelated with disk size and stellar age, but Herbig Ae disks may have less H₂CO compared to T Tauri disks, possibly because of less CO freeze-out. More H₂CO observations toward Herbig Ae disks are needed to confirm this tentative trend, and to better constrain under which disk conditions H₂CO and other oxygen-bearing organics efficiently form during planet formation.
