The proportion of Higher Education students studying online has increased exponentially in the last decade, however not much is known about this cohort and what they want from their university experience.  Furthermore, most universities are attempting to enhance the online resources provided to their on-campus students; however, there is a lack of clarity regarding what aspects of online study on-campus students may value. Do on-campus students value the same aspects of learning as their online counterparts, or do universities need to develop different resources for the various cohorts? In the current study, 525 first year psychology students studying across three study modes (on-campus, online via Open Universities Australia and online via a private provider affiliated with a university) responded to an online questionnaire assessing characteristics associated with both online and face-to-face teaching, and asking what students value in teaching academics. The results are discussed in terms of how universities can best improve their online offerings and how they may incorporate desired ‘offline’ experiences into an online environment.

Students' voice regarding important characteristics of online and face-to-face higher education

This paper explores the preferred learning futures of students at the University of Technology Sydney and the alignments of students’ preferred futures with policy changes. The aim of the paper is to describe a different approach to listening to students’ voices and illuminate some possible ways in which the student voice can influence the implementation of higher education learning policies, with the aim of ultimately improving student learning experiences into the future. Students’ preferred futures were explored through a methodology of rapidly formulated collaborative scenario design, then coded thematically using open coding. Broad themes related to the changing context, learning environments, and independent learning, with students seeing ideal learning in higher education being a combination of personal, social and connected experiences. In order to offer a student perspective that is of use to policymakers, we discuss these preferred futures in relation to the University of Technology Sydney’s ‘learning.futures’ approach, which focuses on changing the way that learning happens in the university.

Listening to student voices through scenario design: Aligning learning.futures

The principle aim of this project was to explore, create and present for discussion plausible alternative future scenarios for learning and teaching in Australian universities. The need to conduct futuring exercises exploring Australian higher education is in response to the rapidly changing higher education milieu, and the desire of universities to react appropriately to meet students' needs while still being able to support academic staff and plan university directions. To determine what students may endorse amongst the new learning and teaching choices, it was decided to consult a primary stakeholder - the students.
