This report describes efforts carried out during early 2008 to determine some of the science drivers for the NERSC-6 next-generation high-performance computing system acquisition Although the starting point was existing Greenbooks from DOE and the NERSC User Group, the main contribution of this work is an analysis of the current NERSC computational workload combined with requirements information elicited from key users and other scientists about expected needs in the 2009-2011 timeframe The NERSC workload is described in terms of science areas, computer codes supporting research within those areas, and description of key algorithms that comprise the codes This work was carried out in large part to help select a small set of benchmark programs that accurately capture the science and algorithmic characteristics of the workload The report concludes with a description of the codes selected and some preliminary performance data for them on several important systems

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) proposes to create a National Facility for Advanced Computational Science (NFACS) and to establish a new partnership between the American computer industry and a national consortium of laboratories, universities, and computing facilities. NFACS will provide leadership-class scientific computing capability to scientists and engineers nationwide, independent of their institutional affiliation or source of funding. This partnership will bring into existence a new class of computational capability in the United States that is optimal for science and will create a sustainable path towards petaflops performance.

National facility for advanced computational science: A sustainable path to scientific discovery

The nanoscience explores the materials which are about 10/sup -9/ times smaller in size. It is the quantum mechanics (or mechanics) that governs the NANO world. A material treated in the nanoscience consists of an infinite or homogeneous system and finite or heterogeneous systems: for example, a protein (finite) in water (infinite) and a molecular wire (finite) connected to metal surface (infinite). It will be essential to combine the "heterogeneous" methodologies in number of different ways to create new theories or computational methods to investigate "heterogeneous" materials in the NANO world. We have been developing a new computational environment which is called GRID. A newly developed method or computer program in a particular research node will be integrated into the collaborative research to be shared in "real time" by the group members scattered among the heterogeneous GRID nodes. One of our concerns in the computational nanoscience is self-organization processes in solution such as micelle (or vesicle) formation and protein folding, in which "solvent" plays a crucial role.

New methodologies in computational nanoscience facilitated by the GRID computing environment

We prove known identities for the Khinchin constant and develop new identities for the more general Hoelder mean limits of continued fractions. Any of these constants can be developed as a rapidly converging series involving values of the Riemann zeta function and rational coefficients. Such identities allow for efficient numerical evaluation of the relevant constants. We present free-parameter, optimizable versions of the identities, and report numerical results.

NERSC has developed a five-year strategic plan focusing on three components: Science-Driven Systems, Science-Driven Services, and Science-Driven Analytics. (1) Science-Driven Systems: Balanced introduction of the best new technologies for complete computational systems--computing, storage, networking, visualization and analysis--coupled with the activities necessary to engage vendors in addressing the DOE computational science requirements in their future roadmaps. (2) Science-Driven Services: The entire range of support activities, from high-quality operations and user services to direct scientific support, that enable a broad range of scientists to effectively use NERSC systems in their research. NERSC will concentrate on resources needed to realize the promise of the new highly scalable architectures for scientific discovery in multidisciplinary computational science projects. (3) Science-Driven Analytics: The architectural and systems enhancements and services required to integrate NERSC's powerful computational and storage resources to provide scientists with new tools to effectively manipulate, visualize, and analyze the huge data sets derived from simulations and experiments.

Topics include: The current state of HPC computing and projections; System management that allows MPPs running many large jobs to achieve greater than 90percent utilization of CPUs; Archive storage issues of improving transfer bandwidth and practical advice for running Terabyte archives; Innovations for client services to ensure the "intellectual resource" is equally valued by clients as the systems; Introduce the Effective System Performance Test a new way to objectively measure and compare not just system performance (e.g. sustained performance of applications) but also system effectiveness (e.g. how many system resources, especially CPU time can really be used by the workload over time); Integrating production with a good is critical to maintaining a robust HPC facility: The tutorial will address how to achieve and maintain this delicate balance. It explores what a facility needs to do to thrive in the new millennium.
