Cloud computing has emerged as an important paradigm to improve resource utilization, efficiency, flexibility, and the pay-per-use billing structure. However, cloud platforms cause performance degradations due to their virtualization layer and may not be appropriate for the requirements of high-performance applications, such as big data. This paper tackles the problem of improving network performance in container-based cloud instances to create a viable alternative to run network intensive Hadoop applications. Our approach consists of deploying link aggregation via the IEEE 802.3ad standard to increase the available bandwidth and using LXC (Linux Container) cloud instances to create a Hadoop cluster. In order to evaluate the efficiency of our approach and the overhead added by the container-based cloud environment, we ran a set of experiments to measure throughput, latency, bandwidth utilization, and completion times. The results prove that our approach adds minimal overhead in cloud environment as well as increases throughput and reduces latency. Moreover, our approach demonstrates a suitable alternative for running Hadoop applications, reducing completion times up to 33.73%.

Improving the Network Performance of a Container-Based Cloud Environment for Hadoop Systems

Cloud computing is a new computing paradigm that presents fresh research issues in the field of digital forensics. Cloud computing builds upon virtualisation technologies and is distributed in nature. Depending on its implementation, the cloud can span across numerous countries. Its distributed nature and virtualisation introduces digital forensic research issues that include among others difficulty in identifying and collecting forensically sound evidence. Even if the evidence may be identified and essential tools for collecting the evidence are acquired, it may be illegal to access computer data residing beyond the jurisdiction of a forensic investigator. The investigator needs to acquire a search warrant that can be executed in a specific foreign country - which may not be a single country due to the distributed nature of the cloud. Obtaining warrants for numerous countries at once may be costly and time consuming. Some countries may also fail to comply with the demands of cloud forensics. Since the field of digital forensics is itself still in its infancy, it lacks standardised forensic processes and procedures. Thus, digital forensic investigators are able to collect evidence, but often fail in following a valid investigation process that is acceptable in a court of law. In addressing digital forensic issues such as the above, the authors are writing a series of papers that are aimed at providing guidelines for digital forensic procedures in a cloud environment. Live forensics and network forensics constitute an integral part of cloud forensics. A paper that deals with guidelines for digital forensic procedures in live forensics was submitted elsewhere. The current paper is therefore the second in a series where the authors propose and present guidelines for digital forensic procedures in network forensics. The authors eventually aim to have guidelines for digital forensic procedures in a cloud environment as the last paper in the series.

Software-Defined Storage (SDS) is an evolving concept in which the management and provisioning of data storage is decoupled from the physical storage hardware. Data-intensive multi-tenant SaaS applications running on the public cloud could benefit from the concepts introduced by SDS by managing the allocation of tenant data from the tenant's perspective, taking custom tenant policies and preferences into account. In this paper, we propose the design of a scalable multi-tenant SDS system. In our approach, tenants are hierarchically clustered based on multiple scenario-specific characteristics. The storage elasticity component of the SDS system is responsible for the dynamic (re-)allocation of tenant data over the available storage resources. It invokes the Hierarchical Bin Packing algorithm introduced in this paper to determine an optimized distribution of tenant data based on the hierarchical tenant tree. We evaluate our system by means of two case studies based on real-life data sets. Experiments confirm that the Hierarchical Bin Packing algorithm achieves a good performance, with execution times below 100 ms to calculate the allocation for 1000 tenants in a worst-case scenario. Furthermore, our system achieves an average utilization of the storage resources close to the configured allocation factor, with reallocation of tenant data balanced over time.

application depends critically on the knowledge dissemination approach used.In this research,a study was conducted on the extent of knowledge dissemination achieved by a hospital’s web application, measured based on the approach of knowledge sharing and knowledge collaboration.
