The memory of the Roman Republic exercised a powerful influence on several generations of Romans who lived under its political and cultural successor, the Principate or Empire. Empire and Memory explores how (and why) that memory manifested itself over the course of the early Principate. Making use of the close relationship between memoria and historia in Roman thought and drawing on modern studies of historical memory, this book offers case-studies of major imperial authors from the reign of Tiberius to that of Trajan (AD 14–117). Some spaces were public but also political, sacred, or foreign; many apparently public spaces were saturated by the private, leaving grey areas and room for manipulation. How did the building projects of Republican dynasts relate to the communal realm? From the Forum to the victory temples of the Campus Martius, culminating in Pompey's great theatre-portico-temple-garden-house complex, The Politics of Public Space in Republican Rome explores how space was marked, experienced, and defined by multiple actors and audiences.

Those who study and teach the history of the Ancient World suffer from a great disadvantage, which we find difficult to admit even to ourselves: in a perfectly literal sense we do not know what we are talking about. Of course we can dispose of a vast range of accumulated knowledge about what we are talking about. We can compile lists of officeholders in the Roman Empire, without our evidence revealing how government worked or even whether it made any impact at all on the ordinary person; we can discuss the statuses of cities and look at the archaeological remains of some of them (or rather some parts of some of them) without having any notion of their social and economic functions, or of whether it made any real difference whether an inhabitant of the Roman provinces lived in a small city or a large village.

The World of the Golden Ass

In recent years, scholars have become increasingly skeptical of the idea that there is any relationship between the capacities of entertainment structures such as theaters and amphitheaters and the populations of Graeco-Roman cities. In this article, we begin by offering a model of information percolation in cities grounded in settlement scaling theory. We then show that there is a systematic relationship between the capacities of both theaters and amphitheaters and the populations of cities in the Roman empire, but this relationship is far from linear, indicating that a decreasing fraction of the population attended events in entertainment structures. In addition, although there is a great deal of variation in the extent to which sites conform to the underlying relationships, there is a relationship between the sizes of these deviations and the overall standing of sites as reflected in their civic statuses. Collecting similar measures for other relationships might be a useful way of characterizing sites and indicates a fruitful avenue for future research. 1 between population size and amphitheater capacity (see fig. 5), focusing on sites with both types of structures. The values are derived by measuring the extent of the deviation of each site from the best-fit line, with the magnitude of the deviation of each site from the theater-size relationship on the x-axis and that from the amphitheater-size relationship on the y-axis. The results of regressing these variables are shown in the inset equation. This exercise shows that there is a relationship between the two sets of residuals such that the sites that have a larger theater than we would expect based on their population size are likely to have a larger amphitheater than we would expect based on their size.

Through six case studies, this book presents a complex and multifaceted picture of how Roman politicians employed oratory to articulate their personal and political agendas, to present themselves to a public obsessed with individual achievement, and ultimately to promote their individual careers. By dealing specifically with orators other than Cicero, this study offers much-needed alternatives to our understanding of public oratory in Rome. Moreover, the assessment of the impact of public speeches on the development of political careers provides new perspectives on the hotly debated nature of republican political culture.

This abridged edition of the magisterial three-volume The Forum of Trajan in Rome makes this definitive study of the acknowledged showplace of imperial Rome available to a wide audience. Published without the scholarly apparatus of the original edition, the paperback version nonetheless presents a complete history of the Forum, its construction, use in antiquity, destruction, and later fortunes. James E. Packer's comprehensive examination also summarizes the archaeological investigations on the site and reviews the nine major restoration studies of the Basilica Ulpia undertaken by scholars of the last 176 years, focusing on the architecture of the Forum. Beautifully and extensively illustrated with both color drawings and black-and-white photographs, this book will be the authoritative guide to the site. The Forum of Trajan has suffered a harsh fate. During the earthquakes of a.d. 810 and 847, its buildings collapsed. From the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries, the site was quarried for its marble, travertine, and peperino. Packer's book is the first to present information from the systematic excavations of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For the buildings still interred, unpublished documents and drawings, representations on coins, and those chance finds reported in the past provide much new information. For the fully excavated East Colonnade and Hemicycle, the West Library, and the Basilica Ulpia, accurate restorations are now feasible. By determining the precise ancient appearance of the excavated buildings, these reconstructions establish, as much as possible, the essential architectural texts for all further study of the site. An afterword discusses changes made to the reconstructions of the Forum's buildings offered in the original text and figures. The result of work on two computer models of the restored architecture of the site (1997, 1999, 2000), these revised reconstructions appear in thirteen new color figures. The other 158 in-text illustrations document the visible ruins, the excavations, and the earlier reconstructions.

Maintained throughout the Roman empire, the Theater of Pompey had fallen into ruins by the early 12th century. By 1762 its remains had been identified, and in 1835 the architect Luigi Canina produced a graphic reconstruction revised byVictoire Baltard in 1837. An 1865 excavation recovered a colossal bronze Hercules and new sections of the theater, but no further studies followed. In 1996-2001 Richard Beacham and James Packer documented the accessible remains, studied the earlier reconstructions, and assembled a catalogue of all references to archaeological finds. Their research led to a small excavation in the ambulacrum that partially cleared modern rubble and recovered ceramic and marble fragments. Foundation trenches for elevators in the southeast court of the palace revealed a deposit of12th- to 15th-century pottery, part of a vault from a radial corridor in the theater, and a frescoed wall fragment. The new documentation and excavation plans also provide important new information on the Pio Palace and the Temple of Venus Victrix. This article provides a more accurate picture of the architecture, appearance, and situation of the the after and related buildings than previously sustaible and considerable propulse for an subsequent excecutions.
