According to one aspect of the present invention, a system is provided for implementing view caching in a framework to support web-based applications. The system comprising a set of server-side objects managed by an object manager (OM) running on a server. The system further comprises a set of browser-side objects running on a browser running on a client. The system also comprises a remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism and a notification mechanism to facilitate communication and synchronization between the browser-side objects and the server-side objects. The system additionally comprises a cache on the client to store layouts of views, wherein each view is a display panel consisting of a particular arrangement of applets.

Network architecture supports hosting and content distribution on a global scale. The architecture allows a Content Provider to replicate and serve its most popular content at an unlimited number of points throughout the world. The inventive framework comprises a set of servers operating in a distributed manner. The actual content to be served is preferably supported on a set of hosting servers (sometimes referred to as ghost servers). This content comprises HTML page objects that, conventionally, are served from a Content Provider site. A base HTML document portion of a Web page is served from the Content Provider's site while one or more embedded objects for the page are served from the hosting servers, preferably, those hosting servers near the client machine. By serving the base HTML document from the Content Provider's site, the Content Provider maintains control over the content.

A message is provided to a tracking server system in response to a client system referencing a predetermined resource locator that corresponds to a resource external to the tracking server system. The tracking server system indirectly provides for the client system to have an informational element selectable by the client system, where the informational element is graphically identified on the client system with informational content obtainable from a content server system through use of a content resource locator. The informational element includes a tracking resource locator, referencing the tracking server system, and data identifying the informational element. Resource requests made by clients of origin servers in a network are intercepted by reflector mechanisms and selectively reflected to other servers called repeaters. The reflectors select a best repeater from a set of possible repeaters and redirect the client to the selected best repeater. The client then makes the request of the selected best repeater. The resource is possibly rewritten to replace at least some of the resource identifiers contained therein with modified resource identifiers designating the repeater instead of the origin server.

Optimized network resource location

An intelligent network agent intercepts transactions between clients and servers to perform Distributed Information Logistics Services (DILS) functions such as automatically retrieving updated files from remote servers and delivering them to local client programs. For example, HTTP clients and HTTPD servers are connectionless and stateless, thus there is no way for a server to update a browser automatically when an HTML document is changed. The invention provides a method to update any number of clients from any number of servers without making any changes to currently existing HTTP clients or HTTPD servers. Furthermore, the invention can provide various other DILS services for clients to reduce latency and communication costs for members of a group with interests in similar objects. For example, the intelligent network agent maintains a cache of objects of interest to the group of clients, a log of changes to the objects, a list of the clients interested in the objects, a list of significant change detection methods for the objects, a list of search specifications for the objects, lists of client notification methods, and lists of general interest specifications for the clients.
