A body support for a bed or a seat having a plurality of resilient support members or springs that are movable between a retracted or collapsed, inoperative position and an extended, operative position. The springs are contained in a case of flexible sheet material so that when the springs are collapsed, the case is collapsed or depressed into a relatively thin layer for storage or other purposes; and when the springs are extended the case will be distended by the springs to provide a resilient support such as a mattress, "box-spring" or a combination thereof for use in a bed or seat. Actuating means is provided for actuating one or more of the springs between the retracted and extended positions thereof, and a connecting means interconnects all of the springs to drive them from the retracted to extended positions. The body support is especially suited to sofa beds or other foldable bed or seat structures because, in this application, the folding parts of the latter structures are coordinated with the body support such that when the bed is folded into the storage position, the springs will simultaneously be moved to their collapsed position contracting the surrounding case into a relatively thin layer, thus enabling the body support to be stored within the confines of the associated structure. Conversely, when the sofa bed is unfolded to form a bed, the springs will move to their extended position to provide resilient support.

A nestably stackable bedding foundation assembly (1) which replaces the traditional border wire and disposed coil spring foundation assembly in a so-called box spring. The nestably stackable assembly (1) has a rectangular wooden base frame (2) with slats (3) to which is attached a nestably stackable assembly wire core (4). The assembly includes a rectangular border wire (10) and longitudinally extending support wires (13) formed in a generally corrugated fashion along their lengths with peaks (15) and valleys (16). Upper connector wires (19) extend across the assembly and are attached intermediate their lengths the support wire peaks. The nestably stackable assembly (1) may be nestably stacked with numerous other assemblies for transportation, thereby avoiding the need to compress and tie the assembly for transportation.

Stackable bedding foundation

A collapsible bedding foundation comprises a rectangular base frame and a rectangular wire grid. The wire grid is hingedly supported upon the frame for movement between a collapsed position and an erect position. The hinged connection between the wire grid and the base frame is achieved by a plurality of transverse spaced, parallel planar support elements pivotally connected to the base frame and the wire grid. The foundation is supported in an erect position solely by a pair of longitudinally extending, parallel planar support elements pivotally connected to the longitudinal edge of the wire grid and, when the foundation is erect, fixedly secured to the base frame.

Collapsible box spring

A foundation unit which can be collapsed for compact shipping and which later can be elevated to a fully expanded state. The foundation unit includes a rectangular, grid wire top bearing structure, a rigid bottom substructure, and a series of spaced, parallel rows of support members extending between the top bearing structure and the bottom substructure. The support members are hingedly secured to the top bearing structure and the bottom substructure to permit reduction of the foundation unit to the collapsed state with the elements of the rows of support members lying essential prone. In the elevated state, each of the rows of support members is composed at least in part of a plurality of spring wire segments comprising a pair of generally flat support elements forming a generally V-shaped configuration.

A floating slat frame adapted to provide additional flexibility within mattress foundations of various configurations. The floating slat frame is constructed for attachment to a core assembly, and has a series of slats in a first plane, at least some of which are resiliently supported relative to a second series of slats in a second plane.

A foundation unit which, when assembled, can be collapsed for compact storage and shipping and later can be elevated to a fully expanded state. The foundation unit includes a rectangular, grid wire top bearing structure, a rigid bottom substructure such as a wooden frame, and a series of spaced, parallel rows of substantially flat support members extending between the top bearing structure and the bottom substructure. The support members are hingedly secured to the top bearing structure and bottom substructure to permit reduction of the foundation unit to the collapsed state with the rows of support members lying essentially prone. In the elevated state, the foundation unit includes stabilizers which are oppositely reactive and which prevent relative longitudinal translation between the top and bottom of the foundation unit. Depending on the firmness characteristics required of the foundation unit, the flat support members can assume one of a number of different configurations, offering total stiffness or varying degrees of recoilable compression of the foundation unit.
