Democratic Innovations in Nepal: A Case Study of Political Acculturation

Witch-hunt is an often overlooked but major social problem in many of the societies in the Global South. Ghana and Nepal represent two such societies where modern-day witch-hunt is frequently reported. This study examines the similarities and differences in witchcraft beliefs and practices in Ghana and Nepal as well as the perpetration of aggressive acts against putative witches in these two societies. Among the issues explored are superstition, witchcraft beliefs, socio-demographic characteristics of victims and perpetrators of witch-hunts, as well as the socio-cultural contexts within which witch-hunts occur.

Gendered injustice: A comparative analysis of witchcraft beliefs and witchcraft-related violence in Ghana and Nepal

On 10 April 2008, Nepal turned a new page in its history. Nearly two decades of violence and instability caused by an ongoing political, economic, and cultural crisis ended with the stunning electoral success of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). In addition to resolving the well-known structural and economic imbalances of the country, after five decades of failed development, Nepal must also find a way to resolve the crisis of rising ethno-cultural nationalism amidst continuing conditions of inequality. We suggest Nepali nationalism provides a grand narrative that goes to the heart of the future of Nepal and its prospects for a sustained democracy.

Rising Ethno-Cultural Nationalism in Nepal: Postmodern Illusion or Democratic Delusion?

Nepal has been struggling to consolidate a democratic political system
 for more than a half-century yet still does not have a working constitution. This paper is the
 first step in a larger research project examining regime transitions in Nepal. We review the
 existent comparative literature on democratization and authoritarian reversals in order to
 isolate some potential explanatory variables. We also focus on making valid descriptive
 inferences along these conceptual lines. What caused the failure of democracy in Nepal in the
 past? What are the future prospects for democratic consolidation? The literature has been
 divided along two lines, which we label as the Weberian and Neo-Marxist research programs. The
 former focuses on modernization and institutionalization, while the latter emphasizes class
 structure. We propose a multi-method research design, combining qualitative comparative analysis
 of most-similar cases with a longitudinal study of Nepal.
