Risk factors for head injury events in professional rugby union: a video analysis of 464 head injury events to inform proposed injury prevention strategies.
Ross Tucker,Martin Raftery,Simon Kemp,James Brown,Gordon Fuller,Ben Hester,Matthew Cross,Kenneth L. Quarrie +7 more
TL;DR: This study confirms that energy transfer in the tackle is a risk factor for head injury, since direction, type and speed all influence HIA propensity, and provides evidence that body position and the height of tackles should be a focus for interventions.
Perceptual cues in the regulation of exercise performance – physical sensations of exercise and awareness of effort interact as separate cues
TL;DR: The results indicate that the physical sensations of effort measured as the P-RPE act as the template regulating performance during exercise and that deviation from that template produces an increase in the sense of effortMeasurement by the TEA score ensures that the chosen exercise intensity does not threaten bodily homeostasis.

Video analysis of concussion injury mechanism in under-18 rugby.
Sharief Hendricks,Sam O’connor,Mike Lambert,James Brown,Nicholas Burger,Sarah Mc Fie,Clint Readhead,Wayne Viljoen +7 more
TL;DR: Training interventions aimed at improving peripheral vision, strengthening of the cervical muscles, targeted conditioning programmes to reduce the effects of fatigue, and emphasising safe and effective playing techniques have the potential to reduced the risk of sustaining a concussion injury.

The COL5A1 gene, ultra-marathon running performance, and range of motion.
TL;DR: The COL5A1 genotype was found to be significantly associated with performance in a 56 km ultra-endurance run, confirming previous findings and furthers the understanding of the relationships among ROM, COL 5A1, and endurance running performance.

Technical determinants of tackle and ruck performance in International rugby union
Sharief Hendricks,Tiffany van Niekerk,Drew Wade Sin,Mike Lambert,Steve den Hollander,James Brown,Willie Maree,Paul Treu,Kevin Till,Ben Jones +9 more
TL;DR: The techniques identified in this study should be incorporated and emphasised during training to prepare players for competition and need to be added to coaching manuals for the tackle and ruck.
