This article reviews the performance of bedside lung ultrasound for diagnosing pleural effusion, pneumothorax, alveolar-interstitial syndrome, lung consolidation, pulmonary abscess and lung recruitment/derecruitment in critically ill patients with acute lung injury.

Role of thoracic ultrasound in the assessment of pleural and pulmonary diseases

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles is desirable practice. It is not only the required technique for industrial and biomedical purposes but also a promising research area. The aim of this study was to synthesize green curcumin silver nanoparticles (C-Ag NPs). The synthesis of C-Ag NPs was achieved by reduction of the silver nitrate (AgNO3) in an alkaline medium. The characterizations of the prepared samples were conducted by ultraviolet visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and zeta potential (ZP) analyses. The formation of C-Ag NPs was evaluated by the dark color of the colloidal solutions and UV-vis spectra, with 445 nm as the maximum. The size of the crystalline nanoparticles, recorded as 12.6 ± 3.8nm, was confirmed by HRTEM, while the face-centered cubic (fcc) crystallographic structure was confirmed by PXRD and SAED. It is assumed that green synthesized curcumin silver nanoparticles (C-Ag NPs) can be efficiently utilized as a strong antimicrobial substance for food and meat preservation due to their homogeneous nature and small size.

Rapid Green Synthesis and Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Arbitrated by Curcumin in an Alkaline Medium.

An ultrasonication based green synthesis approach was used to prepare curcumin-stabilized silver nanoparticles (c-AgNPs) Nanoparticles thus obtained were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) Two different size distributions of c-AgNPs were obtained by changing the ratio of curcumin to silver salt precursor These c-AgNPs were used as catalysts in the catalytic reduction of p-nitrophenol to p-aminophenol The c-AgNPs with narrower size distribution exhibited better catalytic activity as well as lower activation energy Variation of apparent rate constant with the reactant concentration agreed with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) model Consequently, the surface rate constant related to the rate-determining step and the respective adsorption constants of p-nitrophenol and of borohydride were determined as per this model

Ultrasonic evaluation of pleural opacities.

Background: Fractures of the proximal humerus comprise nearly 4% of all fractures and 26% of fracture of humerus. Surgical options ranges from open reduction internal fixation (ORIF), intramedullary device fixation, external fixation to hemi arthroplasty. We compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in patients with proximal humerus fractures.
Material & Methods: This prospective study included 24 patients with 2 part and 3 part proximal humerus fracture treated with ORIF or MIPO technique, with 12 patients in each group. A matched pair analysis was performed and patients were followed up for 3 months, 6 months and 12 months both radiographically and clinically using Constant and Murley score.
Results: The average of patients was 47.2 years. Average blood loss and mean duration of surgery was 287.50 ml and 102.9 mins, in ORIF group and 198.33 ml and 93.75 mins in MIPO group. The mean Constant Murley Score at 12 months in the MIPO group was 77.00, while in the ORIF group it was 72.33. MIPO group experienced significantly less pain, higher satisfaction in activities of daily living, and greater range of motion. In the MIPO group, only one patient had infection whereas in ORIF group three patients, had complications with one each having infection, varus collapse and malunion
Conclusion: The use of MIPO with a locking compression plate in the management of proximal humerus fractures is a safe and superior option compared to ORIF.
