Purpose: To determine whether participation in a week-long residential leisure intervention program targeting individuals with an acquired brain injury (ABI) improved the leisure satisfaction, self-esteem and quality of life (QOL) of participants. The program included leisure awareness, leisure resources, social interaction skills and leisure activity skills. Method: Using a pre- and post-intervention design leisure satisfaction, self-esteem and QOL were assessed prior to, immediately following and at three months post program. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. Results: Participants were eight men and four women aged between 19 and 49 years who were recent clients of a rural Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service. Efficacy of leisure intervention groups in rehabilitation of people with an acquired brain injury

Up to 90% of people with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) report dissatisfaction with the status of their leisure participation and/or social integration. Yet, there are virtually no studies that have investigated the benefits of interventions that target leisure specifically for this population. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Leisure Education Program (Carbonneau, Fontaine, and Lussier, 2006) designed to assist people with stroke to engage in meaningful leisure activities, build leisure self-efficacy and promote general wellbeing would have similar benefits for survivors of TBI. We recruited three community-dwelling survivors of TBI to participate in a 10-week leisure program. All three participants reported some benefit in leisure satisfaction and self-efficacy. This extended to improvements in general wellbeing and health-related quality of life for two of the three. These findings suggest that further investigations into the benefits of leisure education for adults with TBI should be conducted.

Successful and satisfying community living represents the ultimate outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI) rehabilitation. Unfortunately, for the vast majority of affected individuals, full participation in pre-injury roles and responsibilities is negatively impacted by a complex mix of cognitive, physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral impairments. Each individual living with TBI is unique and a reflection of numerous factors including pre-injury character‐ istics, severity of injury, home and community supports, and related internal and external factors. The TBI literature often depicts life following TBI as unproductive, including the need for varying levels of caregiver assistance and supervision. Long-term recovery following TBI is characterized by reduced independence in home and community activities including employment, parenting, driving, and participation in leisure activities [1]. Additionally, TBI is frequently associated with profound social isolation and decreased life satisfaction.

Approaches to Managing Executive Cognitive Functioning Impairment Following TBI: A Focus on Facilitating Community Participation

INTRODUCTION
Over 100 million people worldwide live with disabilities resulting from an acquired brain injury (ABI). ABI survivors experience cognitive and physical problems and require support to resume an active life. They can benefit from support from someone who has been through the same issues (i.e. peer mentor). This review investigated the effectiveness of peer mentoring for ABI survivors.


METHOD
Eleven databases, two trial registers, and PROSPERO were searched for published studies. Two reviewers independently screened all titles, abstracts, and full texts, extracted data, and assessed quality. The PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed to improve transparency in the reporting of the review.


RESULTS
The search returned 4,094 results; 2,557 records remained after the removal of duplicates and 2,419 were excluded based on titles and abstracts. Of the remaining 138, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Five were conducted in the United States, three in Canada, three in the UK, and one in New Zealand. Meta-analysis was inappropriate due to the heterogeneity of study designs. Therefore, a narrative synthesis of the data was undertaken.


CONCLUSION
Although peer mentoring has the potential to positively influence activity and participation among ABI survivors, further research is needed to understand the extent of the benefits.

Peer mentoring for people with acquired brain injury - a systematic review.

Adapting leisure activities is sometimes required for adults with neuropsychological deficits following acquired brain injury. Such adaptations are illustrated through a brief review of relevant literature and case vignettes describing both group-based and individual intervention provided within a holistic milieu-oriented neuropsychological rehabilitation programme. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of cognitive deficits on a person's ability to engage in their desired activities. The personal meaning and psychological adjustment to injury is considered a crucial factor when considering adapting activity. The article will conclude with implications for clinical practice in other settings.
