Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Microfabricated superconducting circuit elements can harness the power of quantum behaviour for information processing. Unlike classical information bits, quantum information bits (qubits) can form superpositions or mixture states of ON and OFF, offering a faster, natural form of parallel processing. Previously, direct qubit–qubit coupling has been achieved for up to four qubits, but now two independent groups demonstrate the next crucial step: communication and exchange of quantum information between two superconducting qubits via a quantum bus, in the form of a resonant cavity formed by a superconducting transmission line a few millimetres long. Using this microwave cavity it is possible to store, transfer and exchange quantum information between two quantum bits. It can also perform multiplexed qubit readout. This basic architecture lends itself to expansion, offering the possibility for the coherent interaction of many superconducting qubits. The cover illustrates a zig-zag-shaped resonant cavity or quantum bus linking two superconducting phase qubits. One of two papers that demonstrate the communication of individual quantum states between superconducting qubits via a quantum bus. This quantum bus is a resonant cavity formed by a superconducting transmission line of several millimetres. Quantum information, initially defined in one qubit on one end, can be stored in this quantum bus and at a later time retrieved by a second qubit at the other end. Superconducting circuits are promising candidates for constructing quantum bits (qubits) in a quantum computer; single-qubit operations are now routine1,2, and several examples3,4,5,6,7,8,9 of two-qubit interactions and gates have been demonstrated. These experiments show that two nearby qubits can be readily coupled with local interactions. Performing gate operations between an arbitrary pair of distant qubits is highly desirable for any quantum computer architecture, but has not yet been demonstrated. An efficient way to achieve this goal is to couple the qubits to a ‘quantum bus’, which distributes quantum information among the qubits. Here we show the implementation of such a quantum bus, using microwave photons confined in a transmission line cavity, to couple two superconducting qubits on opposite sides of a chip. The interaction is mediated by the exchange of virtual rather than real photons, avoiding cavity-induced loss. Using fast control of the qubits to switch the coupling effectively on and off, we demonstrate coherent transfer of quantum states between the qubits. The cavity is also used to perform multiplexed control and measurement of the qubit states. This approach can be expanded to more than two qubits, and is an attractive architecture for quantum information processing on a chip.

Interacting quantum systems are expected to thermalize, but in some situations in the presence of disorder they can exist in localized states instead. This many-body localization is studied experimentally in a small system with programmable disorder. When a system thermalizes it loses all memory of its initial conditions. Even within a closed quantum system, subsystems usually thermalize using the rest of the system as a heat bath. Exceptions to quantum thermalization have been observed, but typically require inherent symmetries1,2 or noninteracting particles in the presence of static disorder3,4,5,6. However, for strong interactions and high excitation energy there are cases, known as many-body localization (MBL), where disordered quantum systems can fail to thermalize7,8,9,10. We experimentally generate MBL states by applying an Ising Hamiltonian with long-range interactions and programmable random disorder to ten spins initialized far from equilibrium. Using experimental and numerical methods we observe the essential signatures of MBL: initial-state memory retention, Poissonian distributed energy level spacings, and evidence of long-time entanglement growth. Our platform can be scaled to more spins, where a detailed modelling of MBL becomes impossible.

This paper examines two collisional mechanisms by which cold alkali-metal atoms can escape from a neutral-atom trap, due to collison of excited- and ground-state atoms. One is fine-structure-changing collisions, by which the atoms are heated by the amount of the fine-structure splitting. The other produces hot ground-state atoms following emission of a red-shifted photon during the course of a collision. A rate expression is obtained that applies to both normal and ultracold temperatures (1 mK). This expression assumes a canonical distribution of initial states, low-intensity excitation, and a semiclassical treatment of the survival probability relative to excited-state decay during the long time of the ultracold collision, and uses fine-structure-changing probabilities found by quantum scattering calculations. The known properties of the attractive molecular states of the alkaline-metal dimers are used to identify and calculate the probabilities for the specific mechanisms. We conclude that the earlier semiclassical analysis by Dashevskaya [Opt. Spectrosk. 46, 423 (1979)] of the fine-structure-changing mechanisms for the various alkali-metal species is qualitatively correct. We present quantum-mechanical calculations of the rate coefficient for fine-structure-changing collisions between ground- and excited-state Cs atoms from 1000 K to 100 \ensuremath{\mu}K. Collision-rate coefficients for the trap-loss processes are calculated for pairs of Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs atoms at low temperature. There is a wide variation of predicted loss rate among alkali-metal species from the fastest for K and the slowest for Li. Retardation corrections to molecular lifetimes must be taken into account to predict the correct rate coefficients for Na, K, and Rb. Good agreement is obtained with the observed trap loss rate in a Cs trap.

Cold collisions of ground- and excited-state alkali-metal atoms.

This paper analyses in detail the gyroscopic, hyperfine and magnetic predissociation phenomenon, and calculates the predissociation rate of molecular iodine. The peculiarities of very weak predissociations and of interference effects between predissociation are presented, and the experimental techniques available for that type of predissociation are discussed. This paper is the theoretical basis of the experimental studies of iodine B state predissociations which are described in the following two papers.

The J′ (J′+1) dependence of the inverse of the lifetime due to a gyroscopic predissociation, is clearly demonstrated. These predisssociation rates are in good agreement with those we obtained by another method based on the study of magnetic predissociation.
