A high reliability dual inline memory module with a fault tolerant address and command bus for use in a server. The memory module is a card approximately 151.35 mm or 5.97 inches long provided with about a plurality of contacts of which some are redundant, a plurality of DRAMs, a phase lock loop, a 2 or 32K bit serial EE PROM and a 28 bit and a 1 to 2 register having error correction code (ECC), parity checking, a multi-byte fault reporting circuitry for reading via an independent bus, and real time error lines for determining and reporting both correctable errors and uncorrectable error conditions coupled to the server's memory interface chip and memory controller or processor such that the memory controller sends address and command information to the register via address/command lines together with check bits for error correction purposes to the ECC/Parity register. By providing the module with a fault tolerant address and command bus fault-tolerance and self-healing aspects necessary for autonomic computing systems compatible with industry-standards is realized. The memory module corrects single bit errors on the command or address bus and permits continuous memory operation independent of the existence of these errors and can determine any double bit error condition. The redundant contacts on the module prevents what would otherwise be single points of failure.

An arbitration system for a shared address, data and control bus provides burst mode operations for transferring data between a peripheral device and memory via a bus master. The arbitration system is responsive to high priority bus activities, such as memory refresh cycles and DMA cycles to temporarily transfer control of the shared bus from the bus master to a circuit controlling the high priority activity. After the high priority activity is completed, the arbitration system returns control of the shared bus to the bus master so that the associated peripheral device may continue operating in the burst mode. This transfer of control occurs without requiring the time overhead of arbitrating priority between bus masters having active bus requests. The arbitration system further includes timing circuits to assure that a bus master transferring data in the burst mode does not retain control of the shared bus for an excessive amount of time.

Shared memory bus system for arbitrating access control among contending memory refresh circuits, peripheral controllers, and bus masters

A bus controller, a number of 1:n bus signal distributors, and a number of bus interfaces are provided for form an hierarchical serial bus assembly for serially interfacing a number of isochronous and asynchronous peripherals to the system unit of a computer system. The bus controller, bus signal distributors, and bus interfaces are provided with circuitry and complementary logic for implementing a master/slave model of flow control for serially interfacing the bus agents to each other to conduct data communication transactions. In certain embodiments, these circuitry and complementary logic further conduct connection management transactions employing also the master/slave model of flow control, implement a frame based polling schedule for polling the slave "devices", employ at least two address spaces to conduct the various transactions, support communication packet based transactions, and/or electrically represent data and/or control states.

A method and apparatus for rapid interconnection (hot plugging) peripheral device interface circuits to a computer bus is disclosed. The interconnections are completed using three sets of conductors in the sequence: common grounds, power from the bus and data lines. The time period between the interconnections is determined by the relative set back lengths of the conductors from the card edge and allows for stabilization of voltage and establishment of a stable high impedance state for the peripheral device controller circuits before the data lines are interconnected.

A data processing system includes a planar board having a central processing unit (CPU), a main memory unit, and input/output (I/O) sockets or slots, each adapted to receive a selected one of a plurality of different and/or similar option cards. Each card contains (or is connected to) and controls a respective peripheral device; and each card is pre-wired with an ID value corresponding to its card type. Software programmable option registers on each card store parameters such as designated default (or alternate) address information, priority levels, and other system resource parameters. A setup routine, during initial power-on, retrieves and stores the appropriate parameters in the I/O cards and also in slot positions in main memory, one position being assigned to each slot on the board. Each slot position is adapted to hold the parameters associated with the card inserted in its respective slot and the card ID value. That portion of main memory containing the slot positions is adapted to maintain the parameter and ID information by means of battery power when system power fails or is disconnected, i.e., a nonvolatile memory portion. Subsequent power-on routines are simplified by merely transferring parameters from the table to the card option registers if the status of all the slots has not not changed since the last power-down, system reset, or channel reset.

Method and apparatus for automatic initialization of pluggable option cards

A multiple computer digital processing system including several Local Buses positioned orthogonally to a Common Bus. Each Local Bus is connected to the Common Bus through a plugably connected Common Bus interface card to provide a transfer of information between Local Buses across the Common Bus. Computer cards, memory cards and other device cards may be plugably connected to the Local Bus to communicate with each other via the Local Buses and Common Bus. The number and types of cards connected and even the number of Local Buses connected to the Common Bus may be varied according to the requirements of each application. Additionally, the Common Bus includes a shared memory accessible by all devices and an InterComputer Interrupt circuit providing interrupts to the computer cards. Further the computer cards are plugably connectable to a Peripheral Bus to provide communications with peripheral devices located externally to the system. All cards connected to the Local Buses and Common Bus include monitor circuits connected through a Test Bus to a System Monitor that configures the system according to the cards connected and the application requirements, detects errors, monitors performance, and provides fault tolerant repair capability under operator supervision.
