TL;DR: The newspaper is the last major medium to which school pupils are exposed as mentioned in this paper, with more rounded newspaper readership beginning at about the eighth grade level, and by the end of high school, two-thirds read a newspaper nearly every day.

Semantic Differential Scales for Newspaper Research
