This paper presents the findings from a systemic enquiry into the current research on Service Design (SD). It examines academic publications on SD over the last two decades using a summative content analysis of 305 articles that use SD as one of its ‘author provided subjects’. The analysis revealed: (1) three distinct groups of publications that use SD differently, with research rooted in Design (142 articles) seen as the driver for development of SD as a discipline; (2) a typological overview of SD research including nine categories differentiated by ‘knowledge’ and ‘methods’. The findings suggest that SD research is largely comprised of practice-oriented and phenomenological studies based on interpretative approaches. Research underpinned by objectivism is noticeably rarer. Future research needs to go beyond practice-based research, to embrace more objective and systemic approaches.

Collaboration in Design Research: An Analysis of Co-Authorship in 13 Design Research Journals, 2000–2015

À medida que uma área de estudo científico cresce e amadurece, paralelamente aumenta também o volume de pesquisa produzida, não sendo diferente no design. Esta realidade, embora animadora, por vezes pode levar a uma dificuldade de se navegar o grande número de informação continuamente sendo construída e publicada, impedindo-nos de obter uma visão macro do estado e trajetória do campo. O presente trabalho tem por objeto de análise a totalidade dos artigos completos publicados online pelas duas principais revistas científicas nacionais dedicadas ao tópico da pesquisa em design: Design & Tecnologia e Estudos em Design. A partir da aplicação de técnicas de análise bibliométrica, foi desenvolvido um estudo almejando obter um panorama, passado, presente (e potencialmente futuro), da pesquisa brasileira em design a partir dos padrões de publicação identificados em ambas as revistas. Neste sentido, foram analisados os tópicos de palavras-chave, literatura crítica, autores mais citados, produtividade, distribuição geográfica, e instituição de origem dos autores de 459 manuscritos, cobrindo um período de 14 anos, ao longo de três recortes de tempo, tendo-se a evolução dos programas de pós-graduação em design nacionais como pano de fundo. Os resultados obtidos apresentam as duas revistas como publicações de amplo escopo temático que, porém, compartilham preferências em se tratando de principais autores e obras referenciados. Os dados também apontam para o eixo Sul-Sudeste como sendo o principal polo de pesquisa em design no país por uma larga margem, apesar de que o surgimento de novos programas de pós-graduação em regiões antes desatendidas gera a expectativa de que esse quadro possa caminhar em direção a uma distribuição mais equilibrada no futuro. Por fim, algumas diferenças entre publicações nacionais e estrangeiras, que devem ser motivo de reflexão, são brevemente apontadas e discutidas.

Panorama da pesquisa em design com assinatura brasileira

Creative industries, those industries structured around the cultural creativity individuality prototype system, are built based on the need for added value of the product. This concept of valued identity may be, when considering a creative industry, the paradigm of an identity of the product concept, of the brand or an ethnical, national identity of the trademark. Decoding product concepts at object level is very important in the context of cultural sustainability of creative industries because it enables knowledge of the semantic and graphic construction and of the general stylistic expression of the product through the analysis of visual semiotics and symbolic items. To establish the place of this type of research in design taxonomy, a synthesis of the European design knowledge map over the last four decades will be presented. In this context the paper proposes to present a method of identity design that focuses on sustainable use of cultural instruments. Identity design, as generative method of the originality of the culturally sustainable design concept, is defined by the complexity of cultural items and visual archetypes that transcend the primary message and reveal, through symbolic qualities of visual language elements and artistic techniques, an entire characteristic universe. Theoretical and experimental data of the method applied in fashion design are presented.

Identity Design - Method of Generating Cultural Sustainability of Creative Industries Products

For a number of years publicly funded research and other activities in the UK have been expected to consider their impact as part of the bidding process as well as during its implementation. More recently, the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF2014, 2012) required case studies demonstrating the impact of research on its external environment.
Although often considered as less academic subjects, design and design management lend themselves to generating impact very well. The outcome of such research should be a product or process that is then used by a target
group to improve the user experience or provide other benefits, which can be deemed as impact.
This paper uses the case study of a series of chair designs and associated research as the basis for an exploration of the various interpretations of impact in relation to the design process and its management. A framework
for predicting and measuring impact for use in future work is proposed.

Exploring impact through seating design

This paper examines the nature of design research, knowledge and theory, as revealed through an overview of the areas of interest that make up published writing on design, specifically that published in Design Studies, since its first publication in 1979. The research proposes a taxonomy of design knowledge addressing the objects, processes and practices of design and consumption. This is used as the basis to trace the history and development of design ideas and design writing over the following 36 years through classifying the issues that are central to the published papers published in Design Studies, and quantifying the changes of emphasis in design topics over that period.

The paper offers proposals for the areas within which design theory resides, suggests that until a mature design epistemology evolves the concept of epistemics is a more appropriate term and reflects on the relationship between design research, knowledge, theory and practice.
