Features of dynamic response sensitivity and its application in damage detection

Automatic health monitoring and maintenance of civil infrastructure systems is a challenging area of research. Nondestructive evaluation techniques, such as digital image processing, are innovative approaches for structural health monitoring. Current structure inspection standards require an inspector to travel to the structure site and visually assess the structure conditions. A less time consuming and inexpensive alternative to current monitoring methods is to use a robotic system that could inspect structures more frequently. Among several possible techniques is the use of optical instrumentation (e.g. digital cameras) that relies on image processing. The feasibility of using image processing techniques to detect deterioration in structures has been acknowledged by leading experts in the field. A survey and evaluation of promising approaches for automatic image-based defect detection of bridge structures

In the past two decades, a significant number of innovative sensing and monitoring systems based on the machine vision-based technology have been exploited in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM). This technology has some inherent distinctive advantages such as noncontact, nondestructive, long distance, high precision, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and large-range and multiple-target monitoring. A lot of machine vision-based structural dynamic measurement and structural state inspection methods have been proposed. Real-world applications are also carried out to measure the structural physical parameters such as the displacement, strain/stress, rotation, vibration, crack, and spalling. The purpose of this review article is devoted to presenting a summary of the basic theories and practical applications of the machine vision-based technology employed in structural monitoring as well as its systematic error sources and integration with other modern sensing techniques.

A Review of Machine Vision-Based Structural Health Monitoring: Methodologies and Applications

Although vision-based methods for displacement and vibration monitoring have been used in civil engineering for more than a decade, most of these techniques require physical targets attached to the structures. This requirement makes computer vision-based monitoring for real-life structures cumbersome due to need to access certain critical locations. In this study, a non-target computer vision-based method for displacement and vibration measurement is proposed by exploring a new type of virtual markers instead of physical targets. The key points of measurement positions obtained using a robust computer vision technique named scale-invariant feature transform show a potential ability to take the place of classical targets.
