The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Application Programming effort provides software support for physics related applications. At the core of this programming framework is a Java class library (XAL) that provides an accelerator based hierarchal view to the programmer. The accelerator hierarchy represents familiar beamline device components such as quadrupoles, corrector elements, BPMs, etc. The direct interfaces to the machine control system (EPICS) are hidden by general methods for each beamline device type. Static configuration information is stored in a database, and read into XAL via an XML interface. Initial applications are described. 1 SNS APPLICATION PROGRAMMING SCOPE The SNS accelerator is being constructed at a greenfield site in Oak Ridge TN. The Application Programming effort covers high-level software, typically involving some sort of physics modeling or interaction between a collection of beamline devices. Given the situation of having no pre-existing legacy software, the possibility of having a relatively uniform software interface to the entire accelerator exists. To take advantage of this situation, we are creating a Java based programming hierarchy, with several goals in mind, including: 1) providing an accelerator physics based hierarchal programming framework of the accelerator, 2) offer a programming interface to accelerator phys icists that hides the connection details to the underlying control system, and 3) offer reusable components for site-wide use. Section 2 describes the overall programming framework including interfaces with other systems. Section 3 provides an overview of the XAL class structure, and Section 4 describes some prototype applications.

Sns application programming environment

The paper presents a prototype of the accelerator commissioning and simulation application toolkit based on the Unified Accelerator Libraries (UAL) framework. The existing UAL 1.x environment has been implemented as an open collection of C++ and Perl packages that address various tasks of accelerator physics. The UAL 2.0 application toolkit has been developing on the top of the Java infrastructure for integrating it with distributed accelerator control systems. The core part of the toolkit is composed of the Common Accelerator Objects (such as Accelerator, Algorithms, etc.) that form the framework for developing project-specific applications. The toolkit environment is not only limited to Java applications, but also supports the development and integration of high-level scripting codes (e.g. Java Python scripts) and existing C/C++ libraries. The configuration and navigation of the project-specific application system is provided by the XML-based Application Manager.

The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is a high current proton accelerator which will officially start construction in September of 2011 in China. The CSNS control system has finished the preliminary design including devices interface determined and high level application. The architecture for Spallation Neutron Source accelerator physics application programs is presented. These high level applications involve processing and managing information from the diagnostic instruments, the machine control system, models and static databases; they will be used to investigate and control beam behavior. Primary components include an SNS global database and Java-based Application Toolkit, called XAL. A key element in the SNS application programs is time synchronization of data used in these applications, due to the short pulse length (1 ms), pulsed (60 Hz) nature of the device. The data synchronization progress is also presented.
