We present a crystallization study of melt‐spun Fe‐Zr metallic glasses. Unlike Cu‐Zr and Ni‐Zr, the immediate crystallization products cannot be understood in terms of the equilibrium crystalline phase diagram: all are metastable or unstable phases. In the composition range Fe25Zr75 to Fe33Zr67, there is evidence that explosive crystallization occurs. The behavior of the activation energy with composition suggests there may be a eutectic at the composition Fe37.5Zr62.5.

Crystallization characteristics of Fe‐Zr metallic glasses from Fe43Zr57 to Fe20Zr80

The structure of the product in mechanical alloying depends both on the elemental composition and the milling conditions. An increase of ball energy led to more pronounced crystallinity of the product. Mechanical alloying at small ball energy leads to the formation of amorphous alloys for Zr-Co and Cu-Ti systems. Demixing of Ti3Cu4 into crystalline TiCu and TiCu4 and demixing of Zr50Co50 into Zr3Co and ZrCo2 was found. The results are explained on the basis of the concept of tribochemical equilibrium.

Tribochemical equilibrium in mechanical alloying of metals

The thermal stability behavior of the metallic glasses a‐Zr2Pd and a‐Zr3Rh was studied by means of x‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and isothermal annealing. While several a‐Zr2Pd alloys each exhibit two exothermic peaks during the DSC heating sequence, three different types of exothermic behavior have been observed for a‐Zr3Rh alloys with nominally identical stoichiometries. These variations in DSC behavior are probably related to different conditions during the rapid quenching procedures. The three types of differential scanning calorimeter behavior shown by a‐Zr3Rh alloys include (1) two peaks of about 715 K and 790 K, (2) a single large peak at about 730 K, and (3) a strong peak at about 725 K with a much weaker peak at about 850 K. The a‐Zr3Rh alloys of type (1) crystallize to form a tetragonal lattice that is a newly identified Zr3Rh phase of the D0e structure type. Electronic and magnetic structure of amorphous Fe-, Co-, NiZr alloys from band theory

We report on the structural evolution of melt-spun Fe 33 Zr 67 and Fe 90 Zr 10 glasses. These glasses are subjected to isothermal annealing over a wide temperature range, varying from the onset of crystallization up to near the melting point, for 20–300 min. Over 733–1223 K, the phase evolution sequence of the Fe 33 Zr 67 glass follows: fcc FeZr 2  → fcc FeZr 2  + bct FeZr 2  → bct FeZr 2 . In contrast, annealing of the Fe 90 Zr 10 glass over 903–1173 K leads to a mixture of α-Fe, Fe 3 Zr and Fe 2 Zr phases. Some Fe 2 Zr crystals are not developed perfectly, showing a special twin lamellar structure. The annealing temperature and alloy composition dependence of grain size in the present Fe–Zr system is discussed.

Structural evolution of Fe33Zr67 and Fe90Zr10 metallic glasses

Amorphous Zr-rich Zr100-xMx alloys were prepared in the composition range 20≤x(Fe)≤35, 22≤x(Co)≤54, 23≤x(Ni)≤64 for M = Fe, Co, Ni respectively. The structure of the amorphous ZrFe alloys was determined by X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer-effect measurements, which indicate a deviation of the atomic arrangements in these metallic glasses from the DRPHS model. The crystallization processes were investigated by a combined analysis of DSC, resistivity, TEM, X-ray and Mossbauer-effect measurements. In the ZrFe system, crystallization of α-Zr as well as ω-Zr and cubic Zr2Fe ( a = 12.2 A ) was observed in the temperature region between 350 and 450° C, followed by a transformation into orthorhombic Zr3Fe which leads to an additional small exothermal peak in the DSC scan. First results of a comparative analysis of the three systems are discussed.
