We present a state-of-the-art report on visualization in astrophysics. We survey representative papers from both astrophysics and visualization and provide a taxonomy of existing approaches based on data analysis tasks. The approaches are classified based on five categories: data wrangling, data exploration, feature identification, object reconstruction, as well as education and outreach. Our unique contribution is to combine the diverse viewpoints from both astronomers and visualization experts to identify challenges and opportunities for visualization in astrophysics. The main goal is to provide a reference point to bring modern data analysis and visualization techniques to the rich datasets in astrophysics.

Visualization in Astrophysics: Developing New Methods, Discovering Our Universe, and Educating the Earth

We observed the X-ray binaries Cir X-1, Sco X-1, GRS 1915+105, GX 13+1, and Cyg X-1 with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Unresolved continuum emission is found at the positions of all the sources at a frequency of 92 GHz, with flux densities ranging between 0.8 and 10 mJy beam−1 . In all cases the emission can be associated with jets that have been extensively observed at lower frequencies. We searched for line emission from Hα recombination, SiO, H2 O, and CH3 OH at the positions of all the sources and, for Cir X-1 and Cyg X-1, also at regions where shocks associated with an interaction between the jet and the interstellar medium had previously been observed. The search did not yield any significant detection, resulting in 3σ upper limits between 0.65 and 3.7 K km s−1 for the existence of line emission in these regions. In contrast, we detected spatially unresolved SiO emission in the field of view of GX 13+1, and we tentatively associate this emission with a SiO maser in a potential young stellar object or evolved star. We also found spatially extended line emission at two additional sites in the field of view of GX 13+1 that we tentatively associate with emission from SO and CH3 OH; we speculate that it may be associated with a star-forming region, but again we cannot rule out alternative origins such as emission from evolved stars.

A search for signatures of interactions of X-ray binary outflows with their environments with ALMA

Enhancing interoperable data access to radio data has become a science priority within the International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA). This lead to the foundation of the IVOA Radio astronomy Interest Group. Several radio astronomers and project scientists enrolled in various projects (NRAO, ASKAP, LOFAR, JIVE, ALMA, SKA, INAF, NenuFAR, etc.) have joined. Together they are paving the way to a better integration of their services in the virtual observatory (VO) infrastructure and propose extension of IVOA standards to help achieving this goal. Calibrated radio datasets such as cubes, images, spectra and time series can already be searched and retrieved using the ObsCore/ObsTAP specification defined in the IVOA, or by data product-specific services like SIAv2, SODA, SSA and ConeSearch. However, properties of radio visibility data are not fully implemented in the VO landscape yet. We need specific features to refine data discovery and selection that are adapted to radio astronomers' need. In this context the VO team at the Centre de Donn\'{e}es astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS) proposes to consider the ObsCore/ObsTAP specification and to establish cross-walks between the ObsCore and the existing Measurement Set (MS) metadata profile for data discovery of radio visibility data (VD). In order to account for the difference in granularity between radio VD datasets and science-ready datasets of the VO, the approach splits a MS data file into a list of datasets served by an ObsTAP service, thus enabling coarse grain discovery in the multi-wavelength context. Radio specific metadata such as number of antennae, frequency ranges, $uv$ plane coverage plots, frequency-phase and frequency-amplitude plots, primary and synthesized beams are also provided either by adding column metadata or by using the DataLink technique.

Radio Astronomy visibility data discovery and access using IVOA standards

Context: WISE J085510.83-071442.5 (W0855) is a unique object: with Teff ca. 250 K, it is the coldest known brown dwarf (BD), located at only ca.2.2 pc form the Sun. It is extremely faint, which makes any astronomical observations difficult. However, at least one remotely similar ultra-low-mass object, the M9 dwarf TVLM 513-46546, has been shown to be a steady radio emitter at frequencies up to 95 GHz with superimposed active states where strong, pulsed emission is observed. Aims: Our goal is to determine the millimeter radio properties of W0855 with deep observations around 93 GHz (3.2 mm) in order to investigate whether radio astrometry of this object is feasible and to measure or set an upper limit on its magnetic field. Methods: We observed W0855 for 94 min at 85.1-100.9 GHz on 24 December 2019 using 44 of the Atacama Large millimeter Array (ALMA) 12 m antennas. We used the standard ALMA calibration procedure and created the final image for our analysis by accommodating the Quasar 3C 209, the brightest nearby object by far. Furthermore, we created a light curve with a 30 s time resolution to search for pulsed emission. Results: Our observations achieve a noise RMS of 7.3 {\mu}Jy/beam for steady emission and of 88 {\mu}Jy for 30 s pulses in the aggregated bandwidth (Stokes I). There is no evidence for steady or pulsed emission from the object at the time of the observation. We derive 3 {\sigma} upper limits of 21.9 {\mu}Jy on the steady emission and of 264 {\mu}Jy on the pulsed emission of W0855 between 85 GHz and 101 GHz. Conclusions: Together with the recent non-detection of W0855 at 4-8 GHz, our constraints on the steady and pulsed emission from W0855 confirm that the object is neither radio-loud nor magnetospherically particularly active.

A search for millimeter emission from the coldest and closest brown dwarf with ALMA

Up to now, the completion of an ALMA interferometric observation is determined based on the achievement of a given shape and size of the synthesized beam and the noise RMS in the representative spectral range. This approach with respect to the angular resolution investigates mainly the longest baselines of the interferometer and says little about the sensitivity at larger angular scales. We are exploring the ideas of angular-scale-based scheduling and quality assessment, and of angular-scale-based visibility weighting as a step towards optimising both observation efficiency and image fidelity. This approach carries the imaging quality assurance into the visibility space where interferometers record the data, and therefore simplifies many aspects of the procedure. Similarly, during scheduling such detailed assessment of the expected imaging properties helps optimising the scheduling process. The methodology is applicable to all radio interferometers with more than ca. 10 antennas.

New methods for ALMA angular-scale based observation scheduling, quality assessment, and beam shaping

CASA, the Common Astronomy Software Applications package, is the primary data processing software for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and is frequently used also for other radio telescopes. The CASA software can process data from both single-dish and aperture-synthesis telescopes, and one of its core functionalities is to support the data reduction and imaging pipelines for ALMA, VLA and the VLA Sky Survey (VLASS). CASA has recently undergone several exciting new developments, including an increased flexibility in Python (CASA 6), support of Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), performance gains through parallel imaging, data visualization with the new Cube Analysis Rendering Tool for Astronomy (CARTA), enhanced reliability and testing, and modernized documentation. These proceedings of the 2019 Astronomical Data Analysis Software & Systems (ADASS) conference give an update of the CASA project, and detail how these new developments will enhance user experience of CASA.
