A review of semi-analytical numerical methods for laminated composite and multilayered functionally graded elastic/piezoelectric plates and shells

Semi-analytical 3-D elasticity solutions are presented for orthotropic multi-directional functionally graded plates using the differential quadrature method (DQM) based on the state-space formalism. Material properties are assumed to vary not only through the thickness but also in the in-plane directions following an exponential law. The graded in-plane domain is solved numerically via the DQM, while exact solutions are sought for the thickness domain using the state-space method. Convergence studies are performed, and the present hybrid semi-analytical method is validated by comparing numerical results with the exact solutions for a conventional unidirectional functionally graded plate. Finally, effects of material gradient indices on the displacement and stress fields of the plates are investigated and discussed. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Semi‐analytical analysis for multi‐directional functionally graded plates: 3‐D elasticity solutions

Current research issues in the development of efficient analysis models and their efficient numerical implementation for smart piezoelectric laminated structures are discussed in this paper. The improved zigzag theories with a layerwise quadratic variation of electric potential have emerged as the best compromise between accuracy and cost for hybrid composite, sandwich and FGM beams and plates. The concept of associating surface potentials to electric nodes and internal potentials to physical nodes is very effective in modeling the equipotential electroded surfaces. Unified formulations for shear and extension mode actuation, and modeling of piezoelectric composite actuators and sensors are discussed. Future challenge lies in developing efficient theories capable of predicting the interlaminar transverse shear stresses in hybrid laminates directly from the constitutive equations.

Semi-analytical solutions for bending and free vibration of composite laminated plates have been derived based on three-dimensional elasticity theory using a newly developed hybrid analysis, which perfectly combines the state space approach (SSA) and the technique of differential quadrature (DQ). The thickness direction of laminates is selected as the transfer direction in SSA, and the DQ technique is employed to discretize the in-plane domains. This actualizes the transformation of the original partial differential equations into a state equation consisting of first-order ordinary differential equations. In particular, the use of DQ technique makes ease of the treatment of various boundary conditions, which cannot be considered in the conventional exact SSA. To avoid numerical instabilities in the conventional transfer matrix method, artificial interfaces are introduced to divide each layer into several sub-layers to reduce the transfer distance and the joint coupling matrices are established according to the continuity conditions at actual and artificial interfaces to implement the global analysis. Comprehensive numerical examples are preformed to validate the present hybrid method. Effects of some parameters on mechanical properties of the laminates are discussed.
