Silicon photonic crystal all-optical logic gates

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a continuously tunable all-optical microwave filter using a silicon opto-mechanical microring resonator (MRR). By finely adjusting the pump light with submilliwatt power level, transmission spectrum of the MRR could be continuously shifted based on the nonlinear effects, including the opto-mechanical effect and thermo-optic effect. Therefore, in the case of optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation, the frequency intervals between the optical carrier (near one MRR resonance) and the corresponding resonance could be flexibly manipulated, which is the critical factor to achieve continuously tunable microwave photonic filter (MPF). In the experiment, the central frequency of the MPF could be continuously tuned from 6 GHz to 19 GHz with the pump power lower than -2.5 dBm. The proposed opto-mechanical device is competent to process microwave signals with dominant advantages, such as compact footprint, all-optical control and low power consumption. In the future, using light to control light, the opto-mechanical structure on silicon platforms might have many other potential applications in microwave systems, such as microwave switch.

In this Letter, an optical gradient force driven Nanoelectromechanical Systems (NEMS) actuator, which is controlled by the Q-factor attenuation of micro-ring resonator, is demonstrated. The actuator consists of a tunable actuation ring resonator, a sensing ring resonator, and a mechanical actuation arc. The actuation displacement can reach up to 14 nm with a measured resolution of 0.8 nm, when the Q-factor of the ring resonator is tuned from 15 × 103 to 6 × 103. The potential applications of the NEMS actuator include single molecule manipulation, nano-manipulation, and high sensitivity sensors.

A photonic thermal sensor has been demonstrated using photonic waveguide-based Michelson interferometer (MI), with a footprint of only $120 \mu \text{m} \times 80 \mu \text{m}$ . Operating at the wavelength $\sim 1550$ nm, this ultracompact MI configuration obtains a nearly linear temperature response with a sensitivity of 113.7 pm/°C, which is $\sim 20$ times higher than that of traditional fiber-optic thermal sensors. It is fabricated using standard CMOS processes. Benefitted from the advanced packaging technique, the proposed photonics sensor shows high thermal and mechanical stabilities, presenting a <0.1-dB power variation over the temperature range of 13 °C–95 °C, offering possibilities across a broad range of applications.

Demonstration of a Photonic-Based Linear Temperature Sensor

In this paper we propose, for the first time, all-optical Majority and Feynman gates in two-dimensional silicon photonic crystals. Photonic crystals are optical semiconductor nanodevices, formed by a periodicity in one, two or three dimensions in the refractive index of a macroscopic media. These devices can operate with low power consumption, high speed and low dissipation of energy to heat. A photonic crystal waveguide is a perfect platform to accomplish the design of all-optical devices. The functionality of logic gates proposed here is achieved due to the light beam interference effect. For the Majority gate, the simulation results show that the transmission to define logic 0 is less than 35% and logic 1 greater than 85%. In addition, for the Feynman gate the transmission to define logic 0 and logic 1 are ≤10% and ≥ 40%, respectively. In order to perform the simulations we applied the FDTD method in the MEEP software package. The Majority and Feynman logic devices presented here can be potential candidates for the realization of low power photonic computational circuits.

In this letter, a nanomachined optical logic gate using optical gradient force is demonstrated. The device consists of a partially free-hanging silicon double-ring resonator developed by the nano-electro-mechanical system technology. The logic NOR gate function is demonstrated at 20 Mb/s with a high extinction ratio of about 21.3 dB. This proposed NOR gate has the advantages of low power consumption (∼0.5 mW), highly compacted size (40 μm × 45 μm), and easy batch fabrication which has potential applications in silicon-photonic integration for digital signal processing.
