Einstein and Ehrenfest's radiation theory is modified in order to take into account the effects of the random zero-point fields, characteristic of classical stochastic electrodynamics, in a system of classical molecules interacting with thermal radiation. This is done by replacing the Einstein concept of “random spontaneous emission” by the concept of stimulated emission by the random zero-point fields. As a result, Compton and Debye's kinematic relations are obtained within the realm of a completely classical theory, that is, without having to consider the wave-particle duality for the molecules or the radiation.

The 'graininess' in the energy content of light is reported in experiments ranging from the blackbody spectrum and photo-electric
effect to revivals in the Jaynes-Cummings model. Laser shot noise and antibunching of correlations in resonance fluorescence signify
a departure from continuous wave behavior for light. Such phenomena underlie the unique sense in which a photon is regarded as an
indivisible particle, experimentally tied to the fact that a beam splitter does not split a single photon of a two-photon pair. We
consider three arguments for indivisibility - quantization of energy, particle-like fluctuations, and which-way measurements. We
argue that in each case, photon indivisibility is an inference based on energy conserving interactions where the detection mechanism
involves countable electrons subject to space and bandwidth limitations. The indivisibility of the photon thus remains an open
question, and one that we can use to probe the foundations of quantum electrodynamics.

A detailed account is presented of the Doppler effect as a photon phenomenon, complementing a recent paper by Giuliani (2013 Eur. J. Phys. 34 1035–47). The essence of Schrodinger's pioneering derivation (1922 Phys. Z. 23 301–3) of a Doppler formula in terms of the corpuscular theory of light, using energy–momentum conservation, is related. Some neglected references that put the whole scene around the Ives–Stilwell experiment into a more precise perspective are highlighted. Atoms as clocks and particle–wave complementarity are also discussed briefly.

Even though this essay is primarily devoted to an assessment of the most sophisticated version of Schrodinger’s interpretation of quantum mechanics, namely at the beginning of the 1950’s, we cannot avoid analyzing in some detail the ideas he defended during the mid-twenties. It was indeed during this early period that Schrodinger first formulated his life-long methodological requirements for a theory of atomic processes. But of course, the perspective we shall adopt is quite different from that of most historians of the beginnings of quantum mechanics. Our task goes beyond identifying an initial version of Schrodinger’s requirements and inserting it within the intellectual context of the time. We also have to track successive statements of these requirements in later texts, and to comment retrospectively on their significance. The very vocabulary we use when we speak of a “theoretical project”, and of the “methodological requirements” which are constitutive of it, has a retrospective tinge. For, after all, little had to be said about the project as long as it appeared to be immediately realized by wave mechanics, and few of the methodological requirements had to be made explicit when they were considered as unproblematically fulfilled by the current theory.

Schrödinger’s Theoretical Project

The Compton formula is obtained in a semiclassical approximation due to Schrodinger. X-rays are treated within classical electrodynamics and electrons within quantum mechanics. The superposition of the wavefunctions of the incident and recoiling electron sets up a moving periodic probability density. Incident X-rays are specularly reflected from this pattern. The results are transformed back into the original rest frame of the electron by the Doppler shift equation. Finally, some remarks pertaining to the philosophy of physics are added.
