Evaluation of granule structure and strength properties of green packed beds in iron ore sintering using high-resolution X-ray tomography and uniaxial compression testing

Folęga Silesian University of Technology, Katowice, Poland In the present paper, results of the research on application of residual fine-grained, carbon-bearing materials as coke substitutes in the shaft process of copper matter smelting are discussed. The addition was introduced into the charge as a component of concentrate-made briquettes; then, its effects on properties of the obtained briquettes were analysed for their compressive and drop strengths. The results of investigations confirmed the potential use of proposed alternative fuels (as briquette components) in the process of copper matte smelting.

Oleksiak Silesian University of Technology, Faculty of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy, Katowice, Poland The testing cycle, described in the paper, included fi ne-grained coke breeze granulation tests and iron concentrate sintering tests with the use of selected granulate samples. The use of granulated coke breeze in the sintering process results in a higher process effi ciency, shorter sintering duration and fuel saving.
