Numerical and experimental study of pulse-jet cleaning in fabric filters

Filtration curves and pulse-jet cleaning performance of different design and operating conditions of a pilot-scale pulse-jet baghouse are investigated. The effective residual pressure loss is used as an index of bag cleaning effect, while the average pulse overpressure inside the bag is used as an index of bag cleaning intensity. It is found that filtration curves vary with the initial tank pressure and the nozzle diameter of the bag cleaning system. The filtration time increases with increasing initial tank pressure or nozzle diameter. However, a critical value of the tank pressure exists for an effective bag cleaning. It is also found that a critical effective residual pressure loss value exists for the pulse-jet cleaning system. Too large an initial tank pressure and nozzle diameter result in a waste of cleaning energy. A Pilot-Scale Study of the Design and Operation Parameters of a Pulse-Jet Baghouse

A numerical model was developed to simulate the unsteady, compressible pulse−jet cleaning process for a fabric filtration system. The objective is to find the best design and operating conditions that provide more cleaning force for bag cleaning. The simulated results of air pressure and flow distributions in the system agree reasonably well with the experimental data. The study shows that tank volume, initial tank pressure, nozzle diameter, distance between nozzle and bag top, and pulse duration are the major parameters influencing the pressure impulse in the fabric bag. For the system investigated, the optimized nozzle diameter is 30 mm, pulse duration is from 300 to 600 ms, distance between nozzle and bag top is 60 cm, and tank volume is 0.3−0.5 m3. Given all other conditions fixed, increasing the tank pressure seems to be the most convenient way to achieve a higher bag cleaning efficiency. Numerical and Experimental Study of Cleaning Process of a Pulse−Jet Fabric Filtration System

In pulse-jet filters, bag cleaning is accomplished by a compressed air pulse being injected into the clean side of a filter bag. This causes an abrupt increase in pressure within it, leading to a flow reversal as well as to acceleration of the filter cloth. Investigations with a 2.5 m long filter bag have shown that it is not the forces arising from the fabric acceleration, but those arising from the reverse air flow which play the major role in bag cleaning, and that the dust-cake release is related to the peak pressure built up inside the bag. In order to achieve complete dust dislodgement, a critical overpressure is necessary at every location along the length of a bag for a certain period of time. This overpressure depends on the dust-cake-fabric interaction. Experiments with flat-geometry fabric samples have shown that the critical overpressure can be found from a laboratory-scale experiment.
