The power consumption of microprocessors is increasing at an alarming rate leading to 2X reduction in the power distribution impedance for every product generation. In the last decade, high I/O ball grid array (BGA) packages have replaced quad flat pack (QFP) packages for lowering the inductance. Similarly, multilayered printed circuit boards loaded with decoupling capacitors are being used to meet the target impedance. With the trend toward system-on-package (SOP) architectures, the power distribution needs can only increase, further reducing the target impedance and increasing the isolation characteristics required. This paper provides an overview on the design of power distribution networks for digital and mixed-signal systems with emphasis on design tools, decoupling, measurements, and emerging technologies.

Power distribution networks for system-on-package: status and challenges

In multilayer microwave integrated circuits such as low-temperature co-fired ceramics or multilayered printed circuit boards, waveguide-like structures can be fabricated by using periodic metallic via-holes referred to as substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). Such SIW structures can largely preserve the advantages of conventional rectangular waveguides such as high-Q factor and high power capacity. However, they are subject to leakage due to periodic gaps, which potentially results in wave attenuation. Therefore, such a guided-wave modeling problem becomes a very complicated complex eigenvalue problem. Since the SIW are bilaterally unbounded, absorbing boundary conditions should be deployed in numerical algorithms. This often leads to a difficult complex root-extracting problem of a transcend equation. In this paper, we present a novel finite-difference frequency-domain algorithm with a perfectly matched layer and Floquet's theorem for the analysis of SIW guided-wave problems. In this scheme, the problem is converted into a generalized matrix eigenvalue problem and finally transformed to a standard matrix eigenvalue problem that can be solved with efficient subroutines available. This approach has been validated by experiment.

Finite-difference frequency-domain algorithm for modeling guided-wave properties of substrate integrated waveguide

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is arguably the most popular numerical method for the solution of problems in electromagnetics. Although the FDTD method has existed for nearly 30 years, its popularity continues to grow as computing costs continue to decline. Furthermore, extensions and enhancements to the method are continually being published, which further broaden its appeal. Because of the tremendous amount of FDTD-related research activity, tracking the FDTD literature can be a daunting task. We present a selective survey of FDTD publications. This survey presents some of the significant works that made the FDTD method so popular, and tracks its development up to the present-day state-of-the-art in several areas. A selective survey of the finite-difference time-domain literature

Detailed numerical simulation, fabrication, and experimental measurements of a 2.4-GHz polarization-diversity printed dipole antenna are presented for wireless communication applications. Two orthogonal printed dipole antennas, each with a microstrip via-hole balun feeding structure, are combined and fabricated on an FR-4 printed-circuit-board substrate. A p-i-n diode circuit is used to switch and select the desired antenna polarization. In the antenna design simulation, a full-wave method of a three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is employed to analyze the entire structure of the printed antenna including the lumped elements of the polarization-selected p-i-n diode switching circuit. The Berenger perfectly matched layer absorbing-boundary condition is used for the FDTD computation. Numerical and measured results of antenna radiation characteristics, including input standing-wave ratio, radiation patterns, and polarization diversity are presented.

3-D FDTD design analysis of a 2.4-GHz polarization-diversity printed dipole antenna with integrated balun and polarization-switching circuit for WLAN and wireless communication applications

A hybrid finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed for solving transient electromagnetic problems associated with structures of curved surfaces. The method employs the conventional FDTD method for most of the regular region but introduces the tetrahedral edge-based finite-element scheme to model the region near the curved surfaces. Without any interpolation for the fields on the curved surface, nor any additional stability constraint due to the finer division near the curved surfaces, the novel finite-element scheme is found to have second-order accuracy, unconditional stability, programming ease, and computational efficiency. The hybrid method is applied to solve the electromagnetic scattering of three-dimensional (3-D) arbitrarily shaped dielectric objects to demonstrate its superior performance.

Hybrid finite-difference time-domain modeling of curved surfaces using tetrahedral edge elements

A general algorithm for modeling arbitrary shape planar metal strips by the finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) method is presented. With this method, fields in the entire computation domain are computed by the regular FDTD algorithm except near metal strips, where special techniques proposed herein are applied. Unlike the case for globally conformed finite-difference algorithms, the computation efficiency of the regular FDTD method is maintained while high space-resolution is obtained by this locally conformed finite-difference method. Numerical tests have verified that a higher computation accuracy is achieved by this scheme than by the conventional staircase approximation. The modeling of electrical characteristics of two crossed strip lines is provided as an example. >
