Policy and society related implications of automated driving: A review of literature and directions for future research

This study investigates the challenges and opportunities pertaining to transportation policies that may arise as a result of emerging autonomous vehicle (AV) technologies. AV technologies can decrease the transportation cost and increase accessibility to low-income households and persons with mobility issues. This emerging technology also has far-reaching applications and implications beyond all current expectations. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the relevant literature and explores a broad spectrum of issues from safety to machine ethics. An indispensable part of a prospective AV development is communication over cars and infrastructure (connected vehicles). A major knowledge gap exists in AV technology with respect to routing behaviors. Connected-vehicle technology provides a great opportunity to implement an efficient and intelligent routing system. To this end, we propose a conceptual navigation model based on a fleet of AVs that are centrally dispatched over a network seeking system optimization. This study contributes to the literature on two fronts: (i) it attempts to shed light on future opportunities as well as possible hurdles associated with AV technology; and (ii) it conceptualizes a navigation model for the AV which leads to highly efficient traffic circulations.

Autonomous vehicles: challenges, opportunities, and future implications for transportation policies

Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) allows for short-distance automatic vehicle following using intervehicle wireless communication in addition to onboard sensors, thereby potentially improving road throughput. In order to fulfill performance, safety, and comfort requirements, a CACC-equipped vehicle platoon should be string stable, attenuating the effect of disturbances along the vehicle string. Therefore, a controller design method is developed that allows for explicit inclusion of the string stability requirement in the controller synthesis specifications. To this end, the notion of string stability is introduced first, and conditions for L2 string stability of linear systems are presented that motivate the development of an H∞ controller synthesis approach for string stability. The potential of this approach is illustrated by its application to the design of controllers for CACC for one- and two-vehicle look-ahead communication topologies. As a result, L2 string-stable platooning strategies are obtained in both cases, also revealing that the two-vehicle look-ahead topology is particularly effective at a larger communication delay. Finally, the results are experimentally validated using a platoon of three passenger vehicles, illustrating the practical feasibility of this approach.

Governing autonomous vehicles: emerging responses for safety, liability, privacy, cybersecurity, and industry risks

Major steps towards implementation of autonomous and connected transport are being taken nowadays. The trend of automation technology being used in vehicles by the most important vehicle manufacturing industries is expected to move closer to high or fully Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) through technological advancements in sectors of robotics and artificial intelligence. Vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities are planning to be available on market, in full scale, in the next years. In the longer term substantial benefits are mainly expected for accessibility to transport, safety, traffic flow, emissions, fuel use and comfort. All these potential societal benefits will not be achieved unless AVs are accepted and used by a critical mass of people. Addressing these challenges, this paper: (a) proposes a technology acceptance modelling process by extending the original Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to explain and predict consumers’ intensions towards AVs, (b) based on the proposed TAM-extended framework, a 30-question survey was conducted in order to investigate the factors influencing consumers’ intensions to use and accept AVs. Results show that the constructs of perceived usefulness, perceived ease to use, perceived trust and social influence, are all useful predictors of behavioral intentions to have or use AVs, with perceived usefulness having the strongest impact. The insights derived from this study could significantly contribute to ongoing research related to technology acceptance of AVs and are expected to allow automobile industries to improve their design and technology.

An empirical investigation on consumers’ intentions towards autonomous driving

In this paper, a study on public opinions towards implementation of automated vehicles in urban areas is reported which is based on a survey in La Rochelle. This was a part of the evaluation activities on the automated vehicle demonstrated in the city. According to the surveys, public attitudes were positive towards implementation of automated buses in urban areas. The most attractive benefit of automated buses would be lower bus fares because of no driver costs. About two thirds of people surveyed would consider taking automated buses if both automated and conventional buses were available on a route. Passenger security would be one of most concerned issues for automated buses especially during night time services. The public attitudes towards automated cars in urban areas were also positive. More than half of the people surveyed stated that they would consider using automated cars if they become available, with three quarters being interested in owning an automated cars, and one quarter in sharing automated cars through services such as car-sharing, car-pooling, or taxis.

Variable speed limits have great potential for smoothing traffic and increasing traffic safety In this study, safety impacts of variable speed limits applications on motorways have been assessed by using microscopic simulation The main factors considered include range of speed limits, penetration rates, and enforcement levels The study results show that application of variable speed limits on motorways can significantly reduce speed differences between and within lanes and number of small headways, an indication of safety benefits to drivers This is part of European COOPERS project which aims to develop cooperative vehicle-infrastructure systems for increasing road safety

Safety Impacts of Variable Speed Limits - A Simulation Study

In this paper, an analysis of driver behaviour is reported focusing on car following separation at low speed traffic conditions. The data used for this analysis was collected using an instrumented vehicle in three European cities: Oslo (Norway), Paris (France) and Southampton (UK). The data collection covered a wide range of traffic conditions on urban motorways, urban arterial roads and urban streets. Time gaps and distance gaps in low speed traffic conditions were investigated and were compared with those in high speed traffic conditions. This research is part of the work of STARDUST, an EU project aimed at assessing the extent to which Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Vehicle Guidance (AVG) systems can contribute to sustainable urban development. The results obtained will be fed into simulation models in the next stage of the project, to assess the impacts of selected ADAS systems in the urban applications.
