This work reports an electron beam irradiation (30 kGy and 90 kGy) approach to narrow the band gap of the pristine CeO2 nanostructure (p-CeO2) to enhance their visible light activity through defect engineering. This was confirmed by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear scan voltammetry. XPS revealed changes in the surface states, composition, Ce4+ to Ce3+ ratio, and other defects in the modified CeO2 nanostructures (m-CeO2). The m-CeO2 exhibits excellent photocatalytic activities by degrading 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue in the presence of visible light (λ > 400 nm) compared to the p-CeO2. Defect-Induced Band Gap Narrowed CeO2 Nanostructures for Visible Light Activities

Water scarcity and its contamination with toxic metal ions and organic dyes represent a serious worldwide problem in the 21st century. A wide range of conventional approaches have been used to remove these contaminants from waste. Recently, nanotechnology has been given great scope for the fabrication of desirable nanomaterials with large surface-to-volume ratios and unique surface functionalities to treat these pollutants. Amongst these, oxide-based nanomaterials emerge as promising new materials for water purication. In this review article, we explore a broad-spectrum overview of recent developments in the area of oxide-based nanomaterials, such as Fe3O4, ZnO and TiO2, as well as their binary and ternary nanocomposites, for the removal of various toxic metal ions and organic dyes. The possible adsorption mechanism and the surface modification of adsorbents for the removal of heavy metal ions and dyes are discussed in detail. The sorption properties of the different adsorbents depend on the surface functionalization of nanomaterials, the pH of the medium, and the reaction time and concentration, etc. In addition, we provide a short overview on the study of the selective adsorbents in multi-component sorption systems, along with the future prospects of oxide nanomaterials in water purification.

Solar light-driven photocatalytic destruction of cyanobacteria by F-Ce-TiO2/expanded perlite floating composites

Nanometer-sized titanium dioxide (TiO2) is an environmentally friendly optical semiconductor material. It has wide application value in many fields due to its excellent structural, optical, and chemical properties. The photocatalytic process of nano-TiO2 converts light energy into electrical or chemical energy under mild conditions. In recent years, the study and application of nano-TiO2 in the agricultural sector has gradually attracted attention. The nano-TiO2 applications of degrading pesticides, plant germination and growth, crop disease control, water purification, pesticide residue detection, etc. are good prospects. This review describes all of these applications and the research status and development, including the underlying principles, features, comprehensive applications, functional modification, and potential future directions, for TiO2 in agriculture.
