Increased professionalism in rugby has elicited rapid changes in the fitness profile of elite players. Recent research, focusing on the physiological and anthropometrical characteristics of rugby players, and the demands of competition are reviewed. The paucity of research on contemporary elite rugby players is highlighted, along with the need for standardised testing protocols. Recent data reinforce the pronounced differences in the anthropometric and physical characteristics of the forwards and backs. Forwards are typically heavier, taller, and have a greater proportion of body fat than backs. These characteristics are changing, with forwards developing greater total mass and higher muscularity. The forwards demonstrate superior absolute aerobic and anaerobic power, and muscular strength. Results favour the backs when body mass is taken into account. The scaling of results to body mass can be problematic and future investigations should present results using power function ratios. Recommended tests for elite players include body mass and skinfolds, vertical jump, speed, and the multi-stage shuttle run. Repeat sprint testing is a possible avenue for more specific evaluation of players. During competition, high-intensity efforts are often followed by periods of incomplete recovery. The total work over the duration of a game is lower in the backs compared with the forwards; forwards spend greater time in physical contact with the opposition while the backs spend more time in free running, allowing them to cover greater distances. The intense efforts undertaken by rugby players place considerable stress on anaerobic energy sources, while the aerobic system provides energy during repeated efforts and for recovery. Training should focus on repeated brief high-intensity efforts with short rest intervals to condition players to the demands of the game. Training for the forwards should emphasise the higher work rates of the game, while extended rest periods can be provided to the backs. Players should not only be prepared for the demands of competition, but also the stress of travel and extreme environmental conditions. The greater professionalism of rugby union has increased scientific research in the sport; however, there is scope for significant refinement of investigations on the physiological demands of the game, and sports-specific testing procedures.

Applied physiology and game analysis of rugby union.

Anaerobic tests are divided into tests measuring anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity. Anaerobic power tests include force-velocity tests, vertical jump tests, staircase tests, and cycle ergometer tests. The values of maximal anaerobic power obtained with these different protocols are different but generally well correlated. Differences between tests include factors such as whether average power or instantaneous power is measured, active muscle mass is the same in all the protocols, the legs act simultaneously or successively, maximal power is measured at the very beginning of exercise or after several seconds, inertia of the devices and body segments are taken into account. Force-velocity tests have the advantage of enabling the estimation of the force and velocity components of power, which is not possible with tests such as a staircase test, a vertical jump, the Wingate test and other long-duration cycle ergometer protocols. Maximal anaerobic capacity tests are subdivided into maximal oxygen debt test, ergometric tests (all-out tests and constant load tests), measurement of oxygen deficit during a constant load test and measurement of peak blood lactate. The measurement of the maximal oxygen debt is not valid and reliable enough to be used as an anaerobic capacity test. The aerobic metabolism involvement during anaerobic capacity tests, and the ignorance of the mechanical efficiency, limit the validity of the ergometric tests which are only based on the measurement of work. The amount of work performed during the Wingate test depends probably on glycolytic and aerobic power as well as anaerobic capacity. The fatigue index (power decrease) of the all-out tests is not reliable and depends probably on aerobic power as well as the fast-twich fibre percentage. Reliability of the constant load tests has seldom been studied and has been found to be rather low. In theory, the measure of the oxygen deficit during a constant load test is more valid than the other tests but its reliability is unknown. The validity and reliability of postexercise blood lactate as a test of maximal anaerobic capacity are probably not better than that of the current erogmetric tests. The choice of an anaerobic test depends on the aims and subjects of a study and its practicability within a testing session.

Standard Anaerobic Exercise Tests

A method is described for measuring the explosive power of the leg in extension which has been found safe and acceptable for all age groups and levels of physical capability. The extension movement takes 0.25–0.40 s in a push through 0.165 m against a flat pedal. At the end of the push the leg is fully extended. The movement is made seated so that the forces are contained between the buttocks and the foot. The seat position is adjusted for leg length and the push is transmitted by a lever and chain to spin a flywheel. The gearing is such that resistance to the movement remains nearly constant throughout the extension. The final angular velocity of the flywheel is measured by an optoswitch and used to calculated the average leg extensor power (LEP) in the push. The reliability of the power measurement was evaluated in 46 subjects ranging in age from 20 to 86 years; they included medical students and geriatric day patients. They were tested on two occasions separated by a week. The maximal values on the first occasion (best of at least five trials) ranged from 30 to 300 W (mean ± 1 SD = 154 ± 88 W). There was no significant difference on re-test and the coefficient of variation was 9.4%. In a subgroup of 9 non-naive subjects who were measured by an experienced observer it was 6.3%. As expected, power was lower in women than in men and declined sharply with age. The sex difference was less when the values were expressed as power per body mass; a sharp age-related decline remained. The results from the LEP rig were compared with results obtained in the same subjects on the same occasion from similar pushes against an isokinetic dynamometer and two-legged jumps on a force plate. There was a highly significant correlation in both cases, Spearman's rank correlation (rho) = 0.73,P < 0.001,n = 16 subjects (age 27 ± 7.5 years) and rho = 0.86,P < 0.001,n = 13 subjects (age 39 ± 10.4 years) respectively.

A new method for measuring power output in a single leg extension: feasibility, reliability and validity.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of voluntary maximal leg strength training on peak power output (Wpeak), vertical jump performance, and field performances in junior soccer players. Twenty-two male soccer players participated in this investigation and were divided into 2 groups: A resistance training group (RTG; age 17 +/- 0.3 years) and a control group (CG; age 17 +/- 0.5 years). Before and after the training sessions (twice a week for 2 months), Wpeak was determined by means of a cycling force-velocity test. Squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), and 5-jump test (5-JT) performances were assessed. Kinematics analyses were made using a video camera during a 40-m sprint running test and the following running velocities were calculated: The first step after the start (V(first step)), the first 5 m (V(first 5 meters)), and between the 35 m and 40 m (V(max)). Back half squat exercises were performed to determine 1-repetition maximum (1-RM). Leg and thigh muscle volume and mean thigh cross-sectional area (CSA) were assessed by anthropometry. The resistance training group showed improvement in Wpeak (p < 0.05), jump performances (SJ, p < 0.05 and 5-JT, p < 0.001), 1-RM (p < 0.001) and all sprint running calculated velocities (p < 0.05 for both V(first step) and V(first 5 meters), p < 0.01 for V(max)). Both typical force-velocity relationships and mechanical parabolic curves between power and velocity increased after the strength training program. Leg and thigh muscle volume and CSA of RTG remained unchanged after strength training. Back half squat exercises, including adapted heavy loads and only 2 training sessions per week, improved athletic performance in junior soccer players. These specific dynamic constant external resistance exercises are highly recommended as part of an annual training program for junior soccer players.

Conclusions: High ballistic performances are determined by both maximization of the power output capabilities and optimization of the F�v mechanical profile of the lower limb neuromuscular system.

Optimal Force-Velocity Profile in Ballistic Movements—Altius: Citius or Fortius?

The force-velocity relationship on a Monark ergometer and the vertical jump height have been studied in 152 subjects practicing different athletic activities (sprint and endurance running, cycling on track and/or road, soccer, rugby, tennis and hockey) at an average or an elite level. There was an approximately linear relationship between braking force and peak velocity for velocities between 100 and 200 rev.min-1. The highest indices of force P0, velocity V0 and maximal anaerobic power (Wmax) were observed in the power athletes. There was a significant relationship between vertical jump height and Wmax related to body mass.
