We are frequently told by its exponents that computer-aided design (CAD) liberates designers and gives them new ways of envisioning their work, but is this really true? CAD in architecture is examined to see to what extent it has enhanced creativity in design. This is partly done by applying a test of creativity advanced by contemporary architect Herman Hertzberger. In this analysis, CAD is found somewhat wanting, and some suggestions are made as to why this might be so.

CAD and Creativity: Does the Computer Really Help?

Designing videogames involves weaving together systems of rules, called game mechanics, which support and structure compelling player experiences. Thus a significant portion of game design involves reasoning about the effects of different potential game mechanics on player experience. Unlike some design fields, such as architecture and mechanical design, that have CAD tools to support designers in reasoning about and visualizing designs, game designers have no tools for reasoning about and visualizing systems of game mechanics. In this paper we perform a requirements analysis for design-support tool for game design. We develop a proposal in two phases. First, we review the design-support-system and game-design literatures to arrive at a plausible system that helps designers reason about game mechanics and gameplay. We then refine these requirements in a study of three teams of game designers, investigating their current design problems and gauging interest in our tool proposals and reactions to prototype tools. Our study finds that a game design assistant that is able to formally reason about abstract game mechanics would provide significant leverage to designers during multiple stages of the design process.

In this paper we shall describe part of the GABLE computer aided architectural design system developed at Sheffield University. This system, written in BASIC to run on Tektronix 4050 series desktop computers, is intended to be capable of being used even in the smallest design office without the need for specialist staff. In particular, we shall show how GABLE allows the user to input a building from a series of simply drawn floor plans in such a way that ISAAC is able automatically to develop a three dimensional model of the inside of each space. We shall show how this system is sufficiently general to accommodate buildings irregular both in plan and section without the need for any restricting planning grids.

We will show how a roof may be described to the system from a roughly drawn roof plan, together with pitches of roof planes and heights of points within the roof in whatever combination is most convenient for the user. RODIN will check the consistency of the information which is given and use it to construct a geometrically correct three dimensional model of the roof. The system imposes no restriction on the type of roof which may be modelled.
