Short descriptions of computer algebra systems are presented in three sections: major systems, special purpose systems, and packages. However, the separation between special purpose systems and packages is not to be taken too literally. An older survey is the paper by Calmet and van Hulzen in [Buchberger et al. 1982]. There is now an excellent new book by Wester [Wester 1999] that covers computer algebra systems.

: In the restricted problem of three bodies, when the mass ratio is such that the characteristic exponents at L sub 4 are equal in pair, the triangular equilibrium is a point of ramification in the analytical manifold of periodic orbits emanating from L sub 4: the branch L sub 4 superscript s of short period orbits can be continued through L sub 4 by the branch L sub 4 superscript l of long period orbits, and this real analytical continuation is unique. The branch L sub 4 superscript l ends with an orbit traveled twice which is an element of L sub 4 superscript s. The branch L sub 4 superscript s meets its mirror image L sub 5 superscript s of short period orbits around L sub 5 on a symmetric orbit which is also an element of the branch L sub 3 of periodic solutions emanating from the collinear equilibrium L sub 3. Around L sub 4, the branches L sub 4 superscript l and L sub 4 superscript s are connected by bridges B(pL,qS) of periodic orbits which start from a long period orbit traveled p times and end with a short period one traveled q times. We have completely explored the bridges B(2L,3S), B(3L,4S) and B(4L,5S). (Author)

But, more and more, the early years were combined with schooling and often started out part-time; and the older years also represented a time of increasing part time work, often as a pathway to total retirement, often as a combination with retirement status. 3) Post World War II America has seen these latter trends accelerate among men. Total labor input between 1950 and 1960 fell, as a matter of fact, under the double impact of the first decline in work life expectancy this century and a significant upturn in part-time labor force activity at both ends of the age scale. 4) Currenttechnological developments as well as trends in the labor management field portend a continuation, if not an acceleration of the past decade's trends. Thus, the impact of automation for the future lies not so much in a great avalanche of complete "leisure" time, bounded by the end of working life and life itself, as in greater opportunities for a blend of work and leisure at both ends of our working lives. The very increase in automation will support this; the consistent and persevering move towards the professional and other white collar jobs as well as the skilled trades, and the move toward the service industries will continue and reinforce these patterns. So does the post war accelerated rise in educational attainment of our population and labor force. 5) What we need most of all in the years ahead to consummate and take advantage of these trends towards more education and training at the beginning and more retirement at the end, combined with greater inputs of part-time work at both extremes of the age scale is a continuation of high rates of economic growth and job generation and programs for moving the unemployed and poor into a posture where they too can become part of the mainstream of gainful activity.

Computer Algebra Systems

This is the second in a series of papers describing the ALPAK system for nonnumerical algebra on a digital computer. The first paper, Ref. 1, is concerned with polynomials in several variables and truncated power series with polynomial coefficients. This paper is concerned with rational functions of several variables and truncated power series with rational-function coefficients. A third paper, Ref. 3, will discuss systems of linear equations with rational-function coefficients. The ALPAK system has been programmed within the BE-SYS-4 monitor system on the IBM 7090 computer, but the language and concepts are machine-independent. Several practical applications are described in Ref. 1. This paper is divided into five sections. The first deals with basic concepts, the second defines canonical forms, and the third describes ALPAK's greatest common divisor algorithm. These three sections do not presuppose any knowledge of computers or computer programming. Section IV describes the use and the implementation of the algebraic operations relating to rational functions of several variables and truncated power series with rational-function coefficients. The reader of this section is assumed to be familiar with the basic concepts of computer programming and with Ref. 1. Finally, Section V discusses very briefly some of our plans and hopes for the future.

This is the third and last in a series of papers describing the ALPAK system for nonnumerical algebra on a digital computer. The first paper1 is concerned with polynomials in several variables and truncated power series with polynomial coefficients. The second paper2 is concerned with rational functions in several variables and truncated power series with rational-function coefficients. The present paper discusses systems of linear equations with rational-function coefficients and a certain class of side relations. The ALPAK system has been programmed within the BE-SYS-4 monitor system on the IBM 7090 computer, but the language and concepts are machine independent. Several practical applications are described in Ref. 1. This paper is divided into six sections. The first two assume that the reader has no knowledge of computers or computer programming and the last four assume that the reader is familiar with basic computer programming and Refs. 1 and 2. Section I is a general description of ALPAK and this paper; Section II discusses the different forms in which a linear system can occur, including canonical form; Section III describes the ALPAK linear system operations for converting these forms; Section IV discusses side relations; Section V describes list naming operations; and Section VI discusses possible future developments and improvements.
