ICT adoption, innovation and financial development in a digital world: empirical analysis from Africa

Contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda is vital for ensuring the future of our society. The sports sector presents opportunities through entrepreneurship to contribute to them. However, little is known about how Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (PASS) students through university education could develop a sustainable mindset to be an entrepreneur. This research analyzes the conditions that generate high and low levels of sustainable entrepreneurial intentions in PASS students. The sample comprises 374 PASS students, with a mean age of 20.80 years (SD = 3.19). A structured questionnaire was administered. The results indicate that it is essential that PASS students perceive themselves as capable of creating and managing a sustainable business efficiently (condition present in all solutions). In addition, they should possess high levels of social and civic values (most explanatory solution: 47% of cases). Besides, is important that they have a positive attitude towards sustainable entrepreneurship and they feel supported by their immediate environment (second most explanatory solution: 36% of cases). Finally, some practical implications for encouraging sustainable entrepreneurial intentions of PASS students are presented.

Innovation and Human Development Perspectives in West Africa

Liquid liabilities are required to develop key sectors that drive the Nigerian economy by ensuring that loans are available for investment purposes. However, controversies concerning the effectiveness of growth finance in fostering liquid liabilities in Nigeria exist. Thus, this study examines the relationship between growth finance and liquid liabilities in Nigeria, with insight into Nigeria’s real sector. In achieving its objective, the study utilizes secondary data from the annual reports of the Central Bank of Nigeria (1980–2018). The study finds that gross domestic savings significantly drive liquid liabilities in the long run compared to other growth finance indicators, which include stock market development and remittance inflows. Therefore, the study recommends that to improve liquid liability, gross domestic savings, among other growth finance indicators, should be harnessed as a tool to efficiently influence liquid liabilities in the Nigerian economy. The study concludes that attention should be paid to development policies that drive all stakeholders’ gross domestic savings.

Economic analysis of growth finance and liquid liabilities in Nigeria

Demographic transitions and technological advancements may lead to a net loss of 5 million jobs by 2020; hence, about 40% (1.4 billion) of the global workforce are vulnerable to unemployment. This is because a more significant percentage of tasks that are already being disrupted by automation are repetitive and standardized processes. At the same time, actions/jobs which require empathy, genuine creativity, and critical thinking will be in high demand in the new workforce, thereby achieving a human-machine collaboration. Thus, this study seeks to investigate the influence that technology has on employment in the Nigerian labor market and how Access to electricity and employment are connected using Nigeria as a case study. The unit root test was conducted via Phillip-Perron (PP) statistics and Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) tests. The Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model was also employed to evaluate the relationship between technology and employment in Nigeria using World Bank data (1960-2017). Results showed that technology and globalization have a long-run statistically significant inverse relationship with employment in Nigeria, which conforms to theory. Policy recommendations promote the acquisition of such skills encompassing critical thinking, empathy, and creativity to enable a better future for the Nigerian labor force.

Effects of technological diffusion and access to electricity on employment in nigeria

ICT adoption has experienced an increasing trend in the past two decades and simultaneously, achieving sustainability in entrepreneurship is the major goal of every entrepreneur; this study seeks to empirically investigate ICT adoption's contribution to sustainability in entrepreneurship. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between ICT adoption and sustainable entrepreneurial development in Western Africa. Panel data on ECOWAS countries were collected and estimated using econometric tools for the purpose of the study. The findings show that a positive statistically significant positive relationship exists between ICT adoption and sustainability in entrepreneurship. The outcome of this study is expected to have microeconomic and macroeconomic implications for sustainability in entrepreneurship within and outside ECOWAS.
