Molecular dynamics simulation using hard particles

The trans–cis isomerization rates for stiff‐diphenylbutadiene (S‐DPB) in n‐alkane solvents were measured using single photon counting methods and the rotational reorientation times τR for S‐DPB and trans stilbene were obtained by picosecond polarization spectroscopy. In neither case did τR vs viscosity show Stokes–Einstein–Debye (SED) behavior. The values of τR were used to calculate the angular velocity correlation frequencies β using the Hubbard relation. The variation of isomerization rate with β was found to be predicted well by the Kramers equation when barrier frequencies of 154 cm−1 for stilbene and 16 cm−1 for S‐DPB were used. This Kramers‐Hubbard fit finesses questions regarding the validity of the one dimensional Kramers model and focuses attention on the SED equation. The dynamical relationship between the torsional friction, important in isomerization, and rotational friction, which determines the overall angular motion of the molecules, is discussed.

Picosecond photoisomerization and rotational reorientation dynamics in solution

The relative roles of microscopic and hydrodynamic contributions to molecular rotation and reorientation are examined within the framework of the microscopic boundary layer theory recently proposed by the authors. The theory is applied to rough spheres, for which computer simulation data are available and to experimental results on spherical top molecules. Attention is focused on rotational diffusion constants, the kappa parameter introduced by Kivelson et al., and orientational relaxation times. It is shown that, while collective effects are present and often nonnegligible, the motion of small molecules is dominated by its microscopic aspects. Experimental trends which can incorrectly suggest dominance by hydrodynamic contributions are discussed in some detail. Finally, the transition to the regime where collective effects are dominant is considered.

Molecular rotation and reorientation: Microscopic and hydrodynamic contributions

The Raman line shapes of the ν1(A 1)C-H and C-D stretching fundamentals in liquid CHCl3 and CDCl3 have been measured as a function of pressure from 1 bar to 4·5 kbar within the temperature range 30°C to 90°C. Densities have also been determined under the same experimental conditions. The vibrational relaxation rates are obtained from the isotropic component of the Raman band and the experimental results can be summarized as follows: (i) as T increases at constant density the vibrational relaxation rate increases; (ii) at constant T, the increase in density produces an increase in the relaxation rate; (iii) an increase in temperature at constant pressure results in an increased relaxation rate. The above three cases hold for the CDCl3 liquid, whereas only (ii) may be stated for the CHCl3 liquid. Raman study of temperature and pressure effects on vibrational relaxation in liquid CHCl3 and CDCl3

A systematic study is made of rotational relaxation in rough sphere fluids for densities ranging from 0.1 to 0.666 of the closest packed density. Many of the current models of rotational relaxation are tested against the results of molecular dynamics. It is found that for densities higher than 0.40 of the closest packed density only the Fokker–Planck model is consistent with experiment. The various extended diffusion models, the jump diffusion model, and the rotational diffusion model are not only internally inconsistent, but also do not agree with experiment. No theory is consistent with experiment at intermediate densities where the collisional and the inertial time scales are comparable. In addition to the foregoing, it appears that the rough spheres tumble more freely in the solid state than they do in the fluid state at the melting density.
