The experimental field of ultracold ion-atom mixtures including an alkali-metal atom and an alkaline-earth-metal ion as well as of homonuclear alkali dimers has paved the way for creating and manipulating the ultracold molecules. The present paper is focused on a study of molecules such us francium dimer and a comparative spectroscopic investigation of the cationic systems Fr-(Ca+, Sr+, Ba+). We adopt a computational scheme without spin-orbit coupling reposed on the full configuration interaction and semi-empirical pseudo-potential theory of the atomic cores Fr+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+ with extended and optimized basis sets. We have determined the adiabatic potentials with their relative spectroscopic constants, the electric dipole moments and the vibrational levels spacings for the 1,3Σu,g+ and 1,3Σ+ electronic states for Fr2 and Fr-AEM+, respectively, correlated toward {Fr(7s) + Fr(7s, 7p, 6d, 8s, 8p)}, {Ca(4s2, 4s4p, 4s3d), Sr(5s2, 5s5p, 5s4d), Ba(6s2, 6s6p, 6s5d) + Fr+}, and {Ca+(4s, 3d), Sr+(5s, 4d), Ba+(6s, 5d) + Fr(7s, 7p)}. The accuracy and reliability of the current results are discussed by comparing with theoretical data available in the literature. The occurrence of some avoided crossings between the neighboring electronic states is leading to a charge or excitation transfer for atom-ion collisions in the diverse charge or excited states. The Σ+-Σ+ transitions are determined in order to evaluate the future radiative lifetimes of vibrational states serving the direct laser cooling.

Non-Relativistic Electronic-Structure Computation of Neutral and Cationic Systems [Fr2, Fr-AEM+ (AEM= Ca, Sr, Ba)].

We investigate neutralization processes (especially thermal surface neutralization), which are required for the magneto-optical trapping of radioactive atoms. A variety of neutralization methods are first summarized: neutral beam injection for fusion reactors, neutral atom implantation in semiconductor processing, and the production of radioactive neutral atoms in accelerators. We focus on thermal surface neutralization, which produces neutral atoms in the thermal energy range for laser cooling. The experiments were carried out with yttrium, gadolinium, and zirconium foils to neutralize francium and rubidium ions for magneto-optical trapping. The results reconfirm that yttrium foil is a good neutralizer (i.e., it has a neutral release efficiency $>65\%$). In addition, the release fraction when using yttrium foil exceeds 75\% at 1350 K, which is greater than the release fraction for the other foils. This reconfirmation is important because few previous studies have focused on thermal surface neutralization. Moreover, the results show that the neutralization efficiency is strongly influenced by the experimental process itself.

Thermal surface neutralization of Fr ions with metal foils for magneto-optical trapping of radioisotopes

Francium is the heaviest species among the alkali elements. Due to its properties, francium is said to be of advantage in measurements of tiny observations, such as atomic parity violation and electric dipole moment. Before executing experiments with francium, it must be produced artificially because it is one of the most unstable elements. We produced francium with the nuclear fusion reaction of an oxygen beam and gold target, ionized the produced francium through a thermal ionization process, and extracted the ion with electrostatic fields. However, the thermal ionization process is known to ionize not only an objective atom but also other atomic species. Therefore, a Wien filter was installed to analyze the composition of the ion beam and purify the beam. This allowed us to improve the beam purity from ∼10−6 to ∼10−3.

Transportation of a radioactive ion beam for precise laser-trapping experiments

Ions with similar charge-to-mass ratios cannot be separated from existing beam profile monitors (BPMs) in nuclear facilities in which low-energy radioactive ions are produced due to nuclear fusion reactions. In this study, we developed a BPM using a microchannel plate and a charge-coupled device to differentiate the beam profiles of alpha-decaying radioactive isotopes from other ions (reaction products) produced in a nuclear reaction. This BPM was employed to optimize the low-energy radioactive francium ion ( Fr + ) beam developed at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University, for electron permanent electric dipole moment (e-EDM) search experiments using Fr atoms. We demonstrated the performance of the BPM by separating the Fr + beam from other reaction products produced during the nuclear fusion reaction of an oxygen ( 18 O ) beam and gold ( 197 Au ) target. However, as the mass of Au is close to that of Fr, separating the ions of these elements using a mass filter is a challenge, and a dominant number of Au + renders the Fr + beam profile invisible when using a typical BPM. Therefore, by employing the new BPM, we could successfully observe the Fr + beam and other ion beams distinctly by measuring the alpha decay of Fr isotopes. This novel technique to monitor the alpha-emitting radioactive beam covers a broad range of lifetimes, for example, from approximately 1 s to 10 min, and can be implemented for other alpha-emitter beams utilized for medical applications.

The fundamental symmetries, charge conjugation (C), parity (P) and time reversal (T), play a significant role in the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particle physics. Of these, T symmetry and the combined CP symmetry are the least well understood, and they hold valuable clues for unraveling the secrets of nature. All subatomic particles are postulated to possess an intrinsic property known as a permanent electric dipole moment (EDM). The EDM of an atom is a combination of those of each constituent particle and also CP-violating interactions between the particles. Being many-particle systems, atoms and molecules are ideal candidates for probing a rich variety of both T- and CP-violating interactions. Paramagnetic atoms, which have a single valence electron in their outer shell, are sensitive to subtle signals associated with CP violations in the leptonic sector, i.e., the EDM of the electron. At present, we are developing a high-intensity laser-cooled Fr factory at RIKEN accelerator facility in an attempt to evaluate the EDM of Fr to an accuracy of 10-30 ecm. Laser cooling is important for achieving highly accurate EDM measurements, since it allows long interaction times using an optical lattice. The current status of the laser-cooled Fr EDM experiments is presented in this paper.

We are planning test experiments of fundamental symmetries based on the intrinsic properties of francium. It is expected that the laser cooling and trapping of francium will produce precision measurements. The pilot experiment using rubidium was performed with the goal of francium trapping. The ion beam generated with a francium ion source was investigated using a Wien filter. Each piece of equipment still must be studied in more detail, and the equipment should be upgraded in order to trap radioactive atoms.
