Highlights Rattling of tractor power take-off drivelines can be detrimental to operators. A novel driveline model, which includes a torsional damper, was constructed. The behavior of the model was validated against that of an actual tractor driveline. The validated model was used to determine the optimal torsional damper parameters. These optimal parameters were validated by laboratory tests. Abstract. Rattle noise and high levels of vibration in agricultural tractors lower the productivity of the operators and may cause serious health issues in them. This study examined a method for preventing resonance and reducing the torsional vibration that causes rattling in tractor power take-off (PTO) drivelines in the idle state using a two-stage torsional damper. The PTO driveline was simplified to a 6-DOF model based on the principle of equivalent mass moment of inertia using commercial simulation software. The variations in the angular velocity of the PTO drive shaft in an actual tractor were measured and compared to the simulation results using a single-stage torsional damper to validate the model. Using this validated PTO driveline model, the pre spring of a two-stage torsional damper was investigated to determine its optimal torsional stiffness to minimize torsional vibration. The simulation results showed that the variations in the angular velocity of the PTO drive shaft decreased as the torsional stiffness of the pre spring decreased; accordingly, an appropriate torsional stiffness reduced the variation in the angular velocity delivered to the PTO drive shaft. The optimal torsional stiffness of the pre spring was determined by considering the manufacturing limitations of the torsional damper and the magnitude of the input engine torque. A pre spring with this optimal torsional stiffness was installed on an actual PTO driveline to measure the angular velocity transmissibility, which was the ratio of the variation in the angular velocity of the engine flywheel to the variation in the angular velocity of the PTO drive shaft, and the results were compared with those of the simulation. When the angular velocity of the engine was 850 rpm, the angular velocity transmissibility of the PTO drive shaft was 0.4 in the actual test, similar to the value of 0.29 obtained using the simulation. Thus, the simulation-optimized pre spring was able to avoid the resonance domain, while considerably reducing the torsional vibration that leads to rattling. The results of this study support the safe operation of agricultural tractors and guide the evaluation of torsional damper configurations of different vehicles.

In this paper, the authors formulate the sensitivity analysis algorithm for the natural frequency of a torsional shafting by expanding the transfer stiffness coefficient method. The basic concept of the present algorithm is based on the transfer of sensitivity stiffness coefficient, which is the derivative of stiffness coefficient with respect to design parameter, at every node from the first node to the last node in analytical model. The effectiveness of the present algorithm is confirmed by comparing the results of the sensitivity analysis and those of the reanalysis for the natural frequencies of a torsional shafting with a constant cross section. In numerical calculation, the design parameter is the diameter of the shaft element of the torsional shafting.

Sensitivity Analysis for Natural Frequency of Torsional Shafting with Constant Cross Section Using Transfer of Stiffness Coefficient

Recently, it is increased by degrees to construct complex and large structures. In general, in order to solve the dynamic problem of these structures they have used finite element method(FEM). In this method, however, it is necessary to prove whether its results are correct or not. Therefore it requires much effort, time and many expenses for dynamic analysis of complex and large structures. Authors have developed the transfer dynamic stiffness coefficient method(TDSCM) which is the new vibration analysis method for complex and large structures on personal computer, and confirmed that the results of this method are good for these structures on personal computer. In this paper, TDSCM is applied to the torsional vibration analysis for the shaft system which consist of concentrated disks and shafts of continuous body. First, we formulate algorithms for torsional free and forced vibration analysis, and compare the results of TDSCM and FEM.

Torsional Vibration Analysis of Shaft System Using Transfer Dynamic Stiffness Coefficient

It is very important to analyze the torsional vibration for the propulsion shafting of ship. The authors have developed the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) as a vibration analysis algorithm. The concept of the TSCM is based on the successive transfer of stiffness coefficient. The effectiveness of the TSCM was verified through many applications. In this paper, the TSCM is applied to the torsional free vibration analysis for the propulsion shafting of an actual shin with a diesel engine. In order to calculate the additional torsional stresses of the propulsion shafting the torsional forced vibration for the shafting is analyzed by using both the modal analysis method and the results of the torsional free vibration analysis by the TSCM. The accuracy of the present method is confirmed by comparing with the vibration analysis results of engine maker.
