Effects of drip irrigation on root activity pattern, root-sourced signal characteristics and yield stability of winter wheat

Proper irrigation and fertilization measures can not only improve water and fertilizer utilization efficiency, but also have important significance in ensuring agricultural environment security and sustainable development. A field experiment was conducted to determine the optimal drip fertilization measure of winter wheat and explain its mechanism by analyzing the physiological and ecological characteristics and utilization efficiency of water and nitrogen under different irrigation and fertilization methods. The plants were treated with three irrigation and fertilization methods: the traditional irrigation and fertilization method (CK), surface drip fertilization (I1) and underground drip fertilization (I2). The results demonstrated that different irrigation methods had various effects on population and physiological characteristics of wheat. The plant height, leaf area and tiller number of I1 were significantly higher than those of CK during the whole growth period. I2 decreased plant height, leaf area and tiller number at jointing stage, but at flowering stage, the leaf area of I2 t was significantly higher than that of CK. Different irrigation methods also affected the root distribution of wheat. At flowering stage, I1 had lower root biomass than CK in all soil layers. The upper root system of I2 was smaller, but the deep root system was larger compared with the control. I1 and I2 had lower total root weight and higher shoot biomass compared to CK, so their root-shoot ratio decreased significantly. I1 and I2 increased and instantaneous water use efficiency (IWUE) by increasing the photosynthetic rate (Pn) and reducing transpiration rate (Tr) at the flowering stage, while I2 had a similar Pn to I1, but reduced Tr, resulting in a higher IWUE than I1. Both I1 and I2 also increased root efficiency, root activity, and Fv/Fm of wheat at the late growth stage, promoting accumulated dry matter after flowering (ADM) and pre-flowering dry matter remobilization (DMR), leading to a significant increase in grain yield. In addition, I1 and I2 had significantly higher water productivity (WP), irrigation water productivity (IWP), nitrogen partial productivity (NPP) and nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE) than CK, especially I2 had the highest IWP, WP, NPP and NAE. These findings highlight the potential benefits of drip fertilization in promoting sustainable wheat production and elucidate the mechanism by which it promotes efficient use of water and fertilizer.

Drip fertilization improve water and nitrogen use efficiency by optimizing root and shoot traits of winter wheat

Growing crops under different soil textures may affect crop growth and yield because of soil N availability, soil N leaching, and plant N uptake. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of three different soils (sandy loam, loam, and clay loam) on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) yield, nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE), and water use efficiency (WUE) by subsurface drip fertigation in the greenhouse. Three different soil textures are sandy loam, loam, and clay loam with 3 replications. The dimension of each lysimeter was 1.0 m(W) × 1.5 m (L) × 1.0 m (H). Cucumber was transplanted on April 8 th and Aug 16 th in 2011. The subsurface drip line and tensiometer was installed at 30 and 20 cm soil depth, respectively. An irrigation with 100 mg NL -1 concentration was automatically applied when the tensiometer reading was 10 kPa. Volumetric soil water content for cucumber cultivation was the highest in 30 cm soil depth regardless of soil texture and was lowered when soil depth was deeper. The volumetric soil water contents at soil depths of 10, 30, 50, and 70 cm were the highest at clay loam, followed by loam, and sandy loam. The growth of cucumber at the 50 th day after transplanting was the lowest at sandy loam. Cucumber fruit yields were similar for all three soil textures. The highest amount of water use at sandy loam was observed. Nitrogen and water use efficiencies for cucumber were higher for clay loam, followed by loam and sandy loam, while the amount of N leaching was the greatest under sandy loam, followed by loam, and clay loam. Overall, growing cucumber on either loam or clay loam is better than sandy loam if subsurface drip fertigation is used in the greenhouse.

Effect of Soil Textures on Fruit Yield, Nitrogen and Water Use Efficiencies of Cucumber Plant as Affected by Subsurface Drip Fertigation in the Greenhouse

The soil water status was investigated under soil surface mulching techniques and two drip line depths from the soil surface (DL). These techniques were black plastic film (BPF), palm tree waste (PTW), and no mulching (NM) as the control treatment. The DL were 15 cm and 25 cm, with surface drip irrigation used as the control. The results indicated that both the BPF and PTW mulching enhanced the soil water retention capacity and there was about 6% water saving in subsurface drip irrigation, compared with NM. Furthermore, the water savings at a DL of 25 cm were lower (15-20 mm) than those at a DL of 15 cm (19-24 mm), whereas surface drip irrigation consumed more water. The distribution of soil water content (θv) for BPF and PTW were more useful than for NM. Hence, mulching the soil with PTW is recommended due to the lower costs and using a DL of 15 cm. The θv values were derived using multiple linear regression (MLR) and multiple nonlinear regression (MNLR) models. Multiple regression analysis revealed the superiority of the MLR over the MNLR model, which in the training and testing processes had coefficients of correlation of 0.86 and 0.88, root mean square errors of 0.37 and 0.35, and indices of agreement of 0.99 and 0.93, respectively, over the MNLR model. Moreover, DL and spacing from the drip line had a significant effect on the estimation of θv.

Field study and regression modeling on soil water distribution with mulching and surface or subsurface drip irrigation systems

The use of subsurface drip fertigation using slurry composting bio-filtration (SCB) as nitrogen (N) fertilizer source can be beneficial to improve fertilizer management decision. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of SCB liquid fertilizer by subsurface drip fertigation on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) yield and soil nitrogen (N) distribution under greenhouse condition. Cucumber in greenhouse was transplanted on April and Aug in 2012. N sources were SCB and urea. Four N treatments with 3 replications consisted of control (No N fertilizer), SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N (50:50 split application), SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N. 100% of N recommendation rate from soil testing was denoted as 1.0N. The subsurface drip line and a tensiometer were installed at 30 cm soil depth. An irrigation was automatically started when the tensiometer reading was -15 kPa. The growth of cucumber at 85 days after transplanting was 5% higher in all N treatment than control. Semi-forcing culture produced more fruit yield than retarding culture. Fruit yields were 62.2, 76.3, 76.4, and 75.1 Mg for control, SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, respectively. Although fruit yields were similar under SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, 176 kg K can be over applied if cucumber is grown twice a year under SCB 1.0N that may result in K accumulation in soil. N uptake was 172, 209, 213, 207 kg for control, SCB 1.0N, Urea 1.0N, and SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N, respectively. N use efficiency was the highest (37%) at SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N under semi-forcing culture. Nitrate-N concentration in soil for all N treatments except control in semi-forcing culture was the highest between 15 and 30 cm soil depth at the 85 days after transplanting and between 0 and 15 cm soil depth after cucumber harvest. These results suggested that SCB 0.5N + Urea 0.5N can be used as an alternative N management for cucumber production in greenhouse if K accumulation is concerned.
